Kernel Update Question

When I update the kernel I usually use emerge --update --world to obtain the latest, then compile, etc.. When I told a co-worker this he looked at me kinda funny like I was doing something wrong. Em I going about updating the kernel wrong?

I always update the kernel separately, just to be sure... The way you do this is ok...
