goto the end of the log file where you have this output. search backwards for gcc.c, I need the output after you see the compile commandline for gcc.c. All I see now is that compile failed for gcc.c but I don't see any syntax error reported for gcc.c.
you know what, just upload the damn output file somewhere, so I can have a look. |

I didn't actually find a log file containing all the emerge output - so I copied the output from the terminal to a file (unfortunately it's not the whole output)

Code: | emerge gcc > /tmp/gcc.out 2>&1 | then upload /tmp/gcc.out
btw, I can't access the site you pointed to. |

in your log file, this is the error:
I Code: | n file included from /var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.4.3-r1/work/gcc-3.4.3/gcc/gcc.c:90:
/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.4.3-r1/work/gcc-3.4.3/gcc/pie-ssp-chain.h:75:2: #error we need ld w/ -pie support
In file included from /var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.4.3-r1/work/gcc-3.4.3/gcc/gcc.c:148: |
do this: emerge binutils > /tmp/binutils.out 2>&1. Then rename /opt/portage/usr/bin/[ld, as, ar, nm, strip] with a .orig extension.
Report any errors during that merge. After that repeat emerge gcc again. |

at this point I am going to ask you to stop and wait for me to release the portage on solaris 10. problems are too many and I don't have direct control over the proceedings. I will let you know in this thread when it becomes available(which might not be very soon considering pieter is still trying to bid on the machines for solaris 10...). |

What is he bidding on?
U5's will run 10, though newer systems take off the shelf ram. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

It may have already been asked, but is the open-sourcing of solaris10 going to help this effort at all? _________________ -Tim Smith |

OpenSolaris will be to Solaris as Darwin is to MacOSX. Sun will still sell Solaris but offer OpenSolaris for free. From what I have heard, OpenSolaris technology will be incorporated back into Solaris but certain parts of Solaris can never be opened due to it containing UNIX (tm) code. Sun's solution to this will most likely be slowly removing System V code from Solaris and replacing it with functional equivalents from OpenSolaris.
I am in the OpenSolaris pilot program because of my Portaris idea. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

not a bad deal!
hopefully having good access will help you with portaris
again, if testers are needed, I volunteer my time/sunblade1000 to the task _________________ -Tim Smith |

GenTimJS, can you please test the latest portage install tar at
http://dev.gentoo.org/~pvdabeel/solaris9/
don't forget to read the README...
the tar installs a set of minimal binary packages for solaris >= 9 in /opt/portage and then installs portage in /usr. if during the install it can emerge binutils, gcc, python under /usr, it will clean up /opt/portage to avoid duplicate installs. make sure you use a fresh install of solaris. I have modified gcc-3.4.3 and toolchain ebuilds recently, so gcc 3.4.3 emerges fine during the install on my test systems. gcc-config also can be used normally as on linux, I have fixed that as well.
gecklord, you might wanna try this even on solaris 10. As I said, I have modified binutils/gcc ebuilds so they are emerged during install time under "/usr", so you should get a gcc built for solaris 10 before you use emerge.
let me know guys!! |

Downloaded latest version for solaris 9. Followed the instructions in the README and when the script comes to emerge sync I get internet connection errors. This is because I am behind a firewall. I changed the line in the script that does emerge sync to emerge-webrsync to fix this (that should be ok right?).
I don't get the same network errors now but I do get this from my emerge-sync.log:
Code: | !!! /etc/make.profile is not a symlink and will probably prevent most merges.
!!! It should point into a profile within /usr/portage/profiles/
!!! (You can safely ignore this message when syncing. It's harmless.)
Fetching most recent snapshot
unable to fetch md5sum, no way to detect corruption. bailing |
Any ideas? |

put that line back in the script and set http_proxy, ftp_proxy,RSYNC_PROXY before running the script. I haven't tested emerge-webrsync.
Code: | export http_proxy=http://<proxy_server>:80
export ftp_proxy=ftp://<proxy_server>:80
export RSYNC_PROXY=<proxy_server>:80
./install-sparc.sh |

am I reading this correctly that we have to be using a proxy?
.. I'm in a streight net connection with static IP space (a /26) and no proxy server of any kind locally ... will this be a problem?
or are those variables just asking for portage server IPS ? _________________ -Tim Smith |

The proxy environment variables are already setup on this server. I can't use the rsync protocol because our firewall blocks it so I have to use emerge-webrsync normally on Gentoo boxes on our network. So does emerge-webrsync work for anyone else inside their installation script? |

if you have other gentoo boxes on the network, then you can setup one of them as the rsync server for your solaris boxes and setup SYNC variable to point to that.
actually, webrsync should work. are you able to do wget of the solaris tar link posted above. |

let me know guys!! |
great - I'll go for it right now |
