Okay, I get an overly long error message in gentoo, and until now I haven't gotten in windows.
Well, I'm getting memory errors. But on the flip side, it could be because I have a gigabyte of ram and I wasn't using ECC. Any suggestions? Unfortunaley, I have no way of copying these errors down because the system is no longer usable after them... _________________ CPU: 3800+ X2 (2.5Ghz)

If you are getting memory errors, the first thing I suggest is replacing it. Borrow 1 known good piece and use it to see which one is bad?
"Not using ECC" is not the problem. It is something that can be configured, but my machine has 6 gigs of ram and I don't have ecc turned on. I need to learn about it more before I turn it on.
The other thing to check is heat problems for the CPU. I know, I always say that, but I think that it is the number one reason for computer (HW) problems.
With Gentoo, the machine gets a solid test, with all that compiling. It can heat the CPU more than other things do.

your RAM module have to be ECC capable before you enable it.
otherwise you will run into all sorts of problems...

Okay, it's ecc ready. The thing is, I'm getting errors in linux talkiing about paging cache. Is that CPU or RAM? I can most likely get it replaced...
But i need to know what's wrong. _________________ CPU: 3800+ X2 (2.5Ghz)

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it is CPU. Paging cache: Paging is talking about memory, and Cache is a bit of information that tells the computer about the "pages" that it is paging. Again, those pages are memory.
the R (registered) is the only part about that memory that is really important. Some AMD64/motherboard setups require registered ram before they will boot. Others don't. But ECC is another story, like I said, 400 days of uptime on my dual machine without turning on ECC. And I bought generic memory. _________________ Get Serious - Get JAWA CZ |

Well with the help of memtest86, I was able to determine that this was not a hit and miss thing. Something was consistently failing. Turns out, it was my second stick of RAM. Seeing as how I've only owned it for a week, I'm sure I can get a replacement.
I also know that the other parts are running stably because I emerged my world last night, updating it as much as possible. And of course this means compiling, so... It finished everything in less than 8 hrs. That includes kdebase, mozilla-firefox-bin and kdevelop... _________________ CPU: 3800+ X2 (2.5Ghz)
