yes, that helped. thank you very much! i now have the same FPS as before i changed to the ati-drivers: +- 750 in glxgears, +-50 in chromium, et seems ok.

are there any other settings i can change to improve functionality?

Not really, it's not particularly tweakable. All your other settings look OK as they are.

Just got mine installed and working after some struggles..
Now I'm wondering about performance.. Is 1625 frames in 5.0 seconds = 325.000 FPS in fgl_glxgears good for a Radeon 9600XT 256mb? In glxgears I seem to get results around 1600 FPS.. This is my first ATI, and my first installed drivers, so I don't have any experience on how they should perform.. :)

Don't worry about the framerates you get from the *glxgears apps. They're not meant to be benchmarks - try some games instead, and use them to benchmark (eg timedemos in UT2K4). The scores are certainly high enough that you can be sure direct rendering is working, but that's all they really tell you.

I get the exact same error no matter what I do. I already compiled kernel twice, thought that was the problem but no.

Have you run "opengl-update ati"? I think the AMD64 OpenGL libs will be located in a different place, so maybe that's why things aren't working. Is it just ET that isn't working?

I'm also getting the same error in quake3, et and UT only plays using mesa. I didn't had this before and just now after syncing. Here are the packages I've updated:

I don't think any of those should have affected your OpenGL libraries. Can you check your Xorg log and see if the glx module is loading properly?

I can't find any warnings or errors in my X.org log. I'm using the radeon driver because I have a Radeon Mobility 7500 card witch isn't supported by the ati-drivers.

I get errors trying to build ati-drivers. Do I need to use a different kernel version? or do I need to do that modules_prepare thing it says (I'm not sure what that does so I thought I'd ask). Thanks :)

2Wedge_: celestia didn't segfault with default configuration and my fresh xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3, ati-drivers-8.8.25, gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.10-r6 compilations, though it used to with the older ati drivers. [ATI Radeon FAQ, Question 4.26].
EDIT: Well ok, celestia doesn't segfault with GL_ARB_vertex_program, but it also runs incredibly slow :)

Problems with radeonfb framebuffer, mplayer -vo gl [gl2] seem to be resolved with the new ati driver, stability has increased, but I'm having a new problem: some opengl applications, when run fullscreen, take only a small part of my screen. E.g. when I alt+enter to fullscreen in quake3, it only takes 1024x768 pixels [that much is set] of my 1280x1024 resolution and resides in the bottom-left corner. Everything else shown is crap. I've seen people having similar problem in this forum and it looks like this is an unresolved bug with the new drivers or smth. Could my presumptions be true?

Looks like it could be, but I couldn't tell you for sure. Are you running with "OpenGLOverlay" set to "on" by any chance?

The MTRR errors aren't critical, but there is a fix here.

I've just spent a couple of hours screwing around with this, and it appears to be down to the fact that Celestia refuses to use anything other than the Xorg OpenGL libraries under /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib, and even has that path hardcoded into the binary for some reason. This is weird, because it should be dynamically linked, and so should use whatever libraries are set up by opengl-update (you can test this by running "ldd /usr/bin/celestia | grep libGL" and toggling between "opengl-update ati" and "opengl-update xorg-x11". The libGL path doesn't change, but if you try the same thing with other OpenGL apps, it will). If you run celestia with:

LIBGL_DEBUG=1 celestia
you can see an error from fglrx, which I think is caused by it loading the Xorg library instead of the ATI library (version mismatch). I think this then causes it to fallback on software rendering, which would explain the poor speeds. As a workaround, you can force it to use the ATI libs by doing

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/ati/lib celestia

which should make a big difference to performance. I'm still not sure why the linking is the way it is, but I'll have another look at it tomorrow.

Can you post the full log (or at least the second half)? If you're using "UseInternalAGPGART" set to "no", then you'll need AGP support in the kernel setup as well.

I'll post the full log tonight when I get back home, however (if memory serves)

UseInternalAGPGART is set to yes.

I went through your help page (very nicely done) and tried to do as closesly as possible. It just looks like the driver is being ignored in favour of xorg native ones.

It wasn't loading automatically so I autoloaded it, and it's not being used.
According to glxinfo I'm still mesa.

Celestia [I guess we are talking about v1.3.2 :)] in "Help->Open GL Info" kind of shows that your conclusions are true :)
When run normally it shows MESA GLX Indirect as it's renderer and with the line celestia is using Radeon 9600 GENERIC. The speed is truly normal with the forced libraries and I wonder too where the error could lie.
Anyway, celestia runs with lots of artifacts on my configuration, when "Star style" is set to anything but "Points" and the window is larger than 640x480. But this is the wrong thread for that, I guess [because this issue was there with the older drivers too] :)

As to my fullscreen OpenGL gaming problem (where programs took only a small part in the bottom-left of my screen), it was only a problem with available modes in my xorg.conf file [Xorg had only 1280x1024 screen size available, so fullscreen programs couldn't set smaller size]. Right now I've got a ModeLine for my LCD [1280x1024@60Hz] and the line

Modes       "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"

in the "Display" subsection of "Screen" section so Xorg can detect all VESA modes and add ModeLines automatically.

When reading some Radeon/ATI guide or howto in this forum, I've seen someone recommending these options:

When run normally it shows MESA GLX Indirect as it's renderer and with the line celestia is using Radeon 9600 GENERIC. The speed is truly normal with the forced libraries and I wonder too where the error could lie.

I remember one of the ATI devs recommending that people don't use the unlisted options like EnablePrivateBackZ. Sometimes it doesn't have any ill-effects, but other times you get the kind of problems you're talking about.

I'm having some issues with fglrxconfig. I am using xorg 6.8 and an radeon x700 pro (which is supported). The first problem I have is that fglrxconfig doesn't seem to have support for the x700 card. It isn't on the list of cards that pops up initially. Other than that I can use it to make the file. I can then rename the file to xorg.conf, but when I try to start kde my display goes blank. If I delete the xorg.conf file kde will start up correctly but looks really ugly (severly distorted graphics). So obviously there is something wrong in that file that keeps it from diplaying proprerly. At the end of the configuration menu, after it asks if it should write the file, it tells me that none of the supported cards were found. Is there another way to set up xorg.conf? How do I define what card I'm using there?

Can you post the Xorg log you get when trying to start with the fglrxconfig-produced xorg.conf?
