I have just purchased the following IBM ThinkPad 600E:

However, I recently read this page:

If you look on the ebay page, you will notice that the battery is quite dead. I am certain this is because of the battery issue. Now, I would like to use a battery with this machine, but not if it is going to die in less than 6 months.
If you look at the bottom of the page on the second link, it has the following possible solution:

You need to do this some times to recover the capacity lost.(at least some of it) A warning: when you charge it, dont use the papers, or you could overcharge the bat, and it is the worse thing you can do to a battery. If you dont understand the process (I know my englis is very poor) I could send you a couple of pics.
I'm trying this with one of the batteries, and it does seem to work. It also sounds reasonably safe. Please try this approach and let me know either success or failure.

This is exciting, but before I do this I would like some input.
- Is this issue only a problem with IBM batteries? Will 3rd party manufactured batteries function properly? Or is it a problem with the ThinkPad? Or are there no 3rd party batteries?
- Is this proceedure safe?
- Does anybody own this laptop, or a similar one? Any experience with this issue?
- Comments? Questions? Advice?

I wouldn't disconnect the two pins that connect to the microcontroller. The battery could literally blow up in your face if you over-charge it.
As a 600E owner who have gone through my share of batteries I must say what seems to work the best is to simply exercise the battery - don't have the cord plugged in all the time since the trickle charging is flawed and it will wear out the batteries. I have only experience of IBM's own batteries, I must admit that. Third party ones may do better.

Well, I would only cover the pins up when I am using it, and I would uncover the pins when it is charging.
Approximatly how many months do your batteries last? And, what exactly do you mean by excerseize?

With exercising the battery I mean don't run it on AC all the time, run it on battery power often.
When you shut it off, unplug the AC cord. Like I said, trickle charging is flawed in the 600E and kills the batteries.
