I used to be able to mount and su. But now when I run mount I get only superuser and do that even though users is in the fstab. And my other bigger problem is I can't su anymore when I do it says sorry su athentication failed. Lets say my root password is cat root can login using cat but when I su and use cat it says the authentication failed.

Most likely you did emerge -uD world and it updated your /etc/group file. Just login as root in one of your ttys and modify that back. You can check and see if I'm correct by typing in "groups".

No my /etc/group file is fine. I am still part of users, wheel and all the other groups that I was before.

Have you tried logging in as root and looking at /var/log/messages? It probably will show you some PAM issues, if any exist, there.

Thanks for the help but I got mad and restored to an earlier point that I made earlier in the day. (lucky me) It is working now. The only thing that I could think of that caused it was a hit the reset button instead of shutting it down once. If I remember these problems started after I did that. Anyway it is working now.

It seems odd that that would have caused it...
