I love linux. I really do. But the one thing that's stopping me fully embracing the little penguin is lack of a really good video editing package (Cinelerra doesn't cut it (yet) and Jahshaka is very young).

I have heard rumours that Adobe are considering porting their software to Linux. If this turns out to be true, it would be the single best bit of news I've heard for a very very long time and would instantly prompt the deletion of my WinXP partition.

So: please please please tell me everything you know about Adobe (and Avid / Apple / Pinnacle?!?) porting their video editing software to Linux. Where did you hear to rumours? Can we trust them? When might the transition happen?

Thanks a lot,
Jack

A few things I've found online...

Here's a quote from ZDnet:

Quote:
Adobe Systems has begun a quiet effort to become more involved with desktop Linux. The maker of desktop applications such as Photoshop and Acrobat Reader has joined a prominent Linux consortium, and is seeking a computer scientist to maintain open source projects and a director of Linux market development. This could be big news despite the fact that the company has made no major commitment of funds, and there's no announcement of a Linux version of Photoshop in the works. Linux' path to the desktop has always been hampered by a shortage of desktop applications. That could change if the applications that businesses use most often began migrating to Linux.

And here's a link to a quick thred on the Adobe Premiere Pro forum (only two posts, nothing very interesting).

And an old (2002) article from PC Mag which very briefly argues for PhotoShop to be ported to Linux here.

This article has a bit more information than the ZDNet article (and says there were 2 linux-related jobs):

CNet article

My personal opinion: it's only a matter of time before Adobe starts bringing over software for professional users. Professional film studios like Weta Digital are already using Linux based software (you can see KDE being used on the LoTR:EE features). Once companies like that start using Linux for certain jobs, it's only a matter of time until they clamor loud enough for Adobe to port their software.

Cool - thanks a lot for that. That CNet article is very intersting. It makes it sound like Adobe are making some interesting moves.

What's the most effective way to show Adobe that we (the Linux users of the world) would love to see Adobe software ported to our favorite OS? Shall we start a petition? Should we each write to Adobe? If so - does anyone know which email address should we use for maximum impact? Of course, we must not be pests - but I think it's important that Adobe are made aware that there really are a lot of people out there who would love to see Adobe software running on Linux.

Thanks,
Jack

There was actually an email that came across our LUG mailing list not too long ago, about Adobe specifically looking for someone to help them develop their 'desktop linux environment' or some hoo-ha like that.

Im too lazy to go find the actual post. plug.org

Hi there,

I've started a little wikipage to document "Adobe and linux". It's here:

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Movie_Making_Manual-Adobe_on_Linux

Thanks,
Jack

Write a letter. Get everyone to write a real letter and flood them in. Emails and online petitions do little impact. A cute move would be sending a post dated check for next year with the purchase price of photoshop for linux (make sure its a subtle voided check).
