|
|
Is there any way to make firefox read its bookmarks from a different partition? Specifically I want to share my bookmarks between gentoo and my windoze box, they're getting annoyingly out of sync sometimes and it's a hassle to update it. Any ideas?
EDIT: I just realized...this is a firefox question...probably should be moved to OTW or something... |

Does a soft link work? I've never tried it, but the file IIRC is $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/<RANDOM>/bookmarks.html. _________________ The free market gave me gonorrhea. |

See my sig (US.EF.UL) for a more general solution. |

Links wouldn't work. That would mean that I wouldn't be able to change my bookmarks in linux, since my windows firefox partition is read only from linux...
But the us.ef.ul thing looks interesting, don't have time to read through it right now though... |

could you write a script that compares, and updates accordingly, the two bookmark files?
you could have the linux side read the windows bookmark file, and update the linux bookmark file to match any additions to the windows one... and vise versa... and I realize that we now run into a problem... Windows can't read the Linux partition...
could you make a FAT32 partition... put the bookmarks file in it, and make links to the actual file on the FAT32 partition from the Windows and Linux partitions?
if not, you could set up an ftp server (possibly even a free one from your ISP) and use one of the extensions for firefox that will syncronize your bookmarks file with one found on the ftp server. _________________ Let us be thankful for fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed.

All of which would be much more complicated and less useful than simply using http://del.icio.us as outlined in the US.EF.UL guide... |

except that, unless I misread your guide, del.icio.us does not share firefox bookmarks, per se, it provides one large bookmark list for everyone to access. I plan on giving the program a try... but, in the spirit of gentoo, I was providing options. _________________ Let us be thankful for fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed.

How about in firefox's about:config?

Did you not see the firefox RSS screenshots?
And you can also look into foxylicious.
Trust me folks, del.icio.us is the ultimate solution to bookmark storage. |

I saw the RSS screenshot... but I do not see how that changes what I said. del.icio.us' purpose is not to share the firefox bookmarks file. In fact, del.icio.us does not do anything at all with/to your bookmarks file. What del.icio.us does do, is it provides one really large community bookmarks file via the internet for the world to use.
And, since the question, originally posted was "Is there any way to make firefox read its bookmarks from a different partition?" I tried to provide answers to that question. _________________ Let us be thankful for fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed.

So?
You are being silly about this.
I never suggested your answer or "option" was in any way wrong.
All I did was point out a more general (and simpler) solution to storing bookmarks. |

del.icio.us (and foxylicious) looks promising, but what about privacy and sharing of information with third parties, commercial use of the data derived from my use of the service, future fees for usage etc.
I dont see any licencing or anything concerning ones privacy....
Pointers, freeix?

I'm pretty sure it is Public Domain.
It's just a database of links, there should be no copyright involved.

Looked up del.icio.us in wikipedia and then realized that its not for storing sensitive information (like urls of login pages that are best kept obscure). However I am still wondering if the del.icio.us service has a licence that guarantees that the data entered wont be used commercially...?? _________________ Aspiring to once become a great geek

There are several competing definitions of "used commercially", and I'm not sure which you are concerned about.
Could you give a specific example? |

Ah, you already answered
Not that I am overly worried, but the data that is entered in such a database (the categorizations people choose, the popularity of the bookmarks etc.) could be commercially valuable. Also assuming that its public domain just because its cool and has an "air" of public domain doesnt make it so. I've been surprised a few times when "public domain" turned into pay or leave things (not that I think del.icio.us will, but..) _________________ Aspiring to once become a great geek
