Guess I can't drop any patches for the next release then. Oh well. Anybody have any non-insane requests? _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

I couldn't even tell what that guy was saying... It's possible it was tounge-in-cheek sarcasm or something, but it sure came out wrong.
I've often thought that people shouldn't nudge, joke around or be sarcastic in any language they are not perfectly fluent in. The line between cajoling and insulting is mighty fine...

But the ATI fglrx module refuses to build, failing with a "DRM module not built" error. It's the same one I got when trying gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.10 (2.6.9 works fine). I've heard something about a portage overlay to fix this. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I like the features of nitro and really don't want to go back to a 2.6.9 kernel. |
Try this. I've got the fglrx driver working fine now. Also make sure you emerge the latest version of opengl-update, as there has been an important bug removed very recently. | Using that, I get the following error:
(Note: I renamed the ebuild from -r3 to -r4 because there's a different -r3 in portage that I didn't want to conflict with. I get the same error with the portage -r3.) Code: | emerge =ati-drivers-8.8.25-r4
Calculating dependencies
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "=ati-drivers-8.8.25-r4" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request
- media-video/ati-drivers-8.8.25-r4 (masked by: -* keyword) | I'm currently asking around in the Portage forum trying to figure out how to bypass this - putting it in /etc/portage/package.unmask didn't work. Any tips? I'm currently running X just fine on the generic ATI driver. However, 3D Acceleration is a must for me. I love Nitro sources - they're fast, flexible, and this USB Mouse Polling patch is one of the greatest things I've seen yet (Makes my Intellimouse Explorer feel like an MX1000). But if I can't get 3D acceleration.... I guess I'll go back to gentoo-dev-sources. I'm more than willing to try any ideas; I'm just running out of them. |
This may/may not work, but try use ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="-*" emerge ati-drivers-8.8.25-r4

Correction: Arainach, you have to unmask it by editing the ebuild (I'm guessing it's hardmasked in there) and changing -* to x86 or whatever you're on. If that doesn't work, add the appropriate entry to /etc/portage/package.unmask. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

Oh yeah, its sarcasm. Thanks for the tipp Gserack, cause itsnt my language. I'm going to stop my joking.
tiger, you dont have to say words like this, or maybe it is your style. but i hope it isnt.
i should go to jail for a statement? sorry for my spam and for my mistaken post.
dont be so angry, i think, you dont sell kernels, but i'm going to try morph-sources if nitro-sources panics with my username (hmm, i can still log with root :-), bad idea, yeah?)
oh, and i'm not a a-hole. but the funny is, people with statements like these are in jail.
to the thread: i really like the kernel, it runs nice. _________________ Too many connections. Please try again later. |

ahorn: Tiger683 meant his statement in a purely joking manner. We realize here that not everyone can speak English as their primary language, and half the nitro developers are in that state as well. You should probably make sure that your post cannot be taken the wrong way (I honestly had no idea what your first post said) so that this doesn't happen
Nobody is going to jail (except maybe me for abusing too many underage kernels...), and there will be no kernel panics related to usernames or anything of the sort. First of all, that would be far too much effort. Second, the nitro devs don't have enough time to create custom kill-on-login functions in nitro because we have better things to do than screw up something that actually has potential. Third, we just don't care enough to make sure that specific users don't use nitro.
Our policy is that if you like another patchset better, or you find another patchset to suit your needs more effectively, you should use that. We make nitro-sources because we believe that we're making something worthwhile, and because we find stock kernels to be boring/lacking.

...The bypass and the overlay worked perfectly.
The embarrasing point came when I was still getting ~x86 errors and noticed that my package.keywords said "media-drivers/ati-drivers", not "media-video/ati-drivers"; I'm not sure if the -* bypass was needed or not. Either way, I now have a blazing fast kernel and 3D Acceleration. Thanks to everyone who helped me. I love these sources! Yes, i see it. I think, thats the point (my bad english). so again, sorry for my mistake.
The way, Tiger said, all is secretly, has remind me to binaries. like the cedega/wine stuff and thinks like that ..., thats what i wanted to put in this little sentence. shame on me, my dictonary is not big enough to say it funny in the english language. _________________ Too many connections. ahorn: Ah, I get it now. Your joke was that we would sell nitro-sources as transgaming sells cedega. I doubt this will happen (unless seppe gets REALLY poor) . Also: With this kernel I am unable to get my vesa-tng fbsplash or Framebuffer working. I simply get the normal text-only screen. Here's the applicable lines from my grub.conf:
title Gentoo Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-nitro ro root=/dev/hda3 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,pmipal,1280x1024-32@60 splash=verbose,theme:emergence
initrd (hd0,0)/fbsplash-emergence-1280x1024
Any ideas as to what I need to fix? _________________ Gentoo: Stage3 w/ NPTL & udev, gcc 3.4.4 full rebuild

Ok, let me put it this way:
anything that is opensource AND licenced as free of charge, so linux kernel is an example of such software
(please, this discussion has ALWAYS been around, so lets not start it here, i bet you got my point anyway...)
cheers,

i won't be able to test this great/perfect/cool kernel before saturday but i have a question : does netfilter compile fine ? because on previous nitro releases, i got a strange error when i tried to compile module ipv4_conntrack (i can't remember, but i think it said that a function was declared inside parameters or something like that ). Does someone else got the same problem ? |
