Okay, I've read the docs, searched the forum and experimented serveral times and I'm now very confused. I think others have experienced this too from the forum messages I've read so I hope this will help others out.

I tried to install Gnome using the GRP files on my LiveCD (Athlon, stage 3). I followed the instructions in the install docs and so have the packages mount at /GRP on my installation and I've run the source /etc/profile bits too. I have gnome and gtk in the USE variables via the use.defaults (spel?) file, i.e. they are not removed in my make.conf.

I've run the grp-install.sh with gnome-list.txt and it completes saying ">>> gnome-base/gnome exists, skipping". I tried it several times and it ends after installing some SGML stuff and Scrollkeeper (which it does every time) with that message.

When I tried to run gdm, it could not be found. 'which gdm' indicates it's not in the path too.

Now, I was about to send this message when I ran the grp-install.sh again (changing nothing) for about the 5th time and this time it installed some more stuff. It again exited with the 'gnome-base/gnome exists, skipping' message, but this time gdm is now on the path.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I've seen other messages hinting to run grp-install.sh several times but how does one know when everything is done and why is stuff randomly installed?

Thanks,
Paul.

Okay, it seems that pretty much everything is installed now. I think it was a problem with sound, as someone else mentioned on another post.

I'm also getting the xscreensaver error on startup, but I can live without that for now.

The main thing I want to get across is to keep running that grp-install.sh script despite it seeming to do nothing extra each time. It does in fact install more stuff on the subsequent runs.

The new Gnome is very nice btw :)

This page seems to sum up my problems https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=32787&highlight=xscreensaver. Kind of makes this thread a dupe :).
