AAAAARG!

I think my hard drive is about to die, but maybe someone can help:

on bootup I get a lot of errors about hda, so I had a look in /var/log/messages

This is what I get:

Code:
Feb 20 16:24:12 klang hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Feb 20 16:24:12 klang hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }
Feb 20 16:24:12 klang ide: failed opcode was: unknown

I get this entry multiple times (say once a second)

lspci -v shows the IDE controller:

Code:
0000:00:09.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation nForce2 IDE (rev a2) (prog-if 8a
[Master SecP PriP])
Subsystem: Asustek Computer, Inc.: Unknown device 0c11
Flags: bus master, 66Mhz, fast devsel, latency 0
        I/O ports at f000 [size=16]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2

I haven't installed anything recently, or recompiled any kernels. Basically I haven't changed anything!!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sam

As a follow on, I tried to emerge smartmontools and it wouldn't let me- some permissions error. I then ran an emerge sync and got a LOT of permissions errors. So I rebooted, only to be greeted with

Code:
uncompressing linux....
crc error
-- system halted

I dual boot with windows, so I have now booted into that, and it ran a whole load of disk consistancy checks on startup (which suggests this is a hardware problem rather than a fixable software one, right?)

Anyway, I am about to try and use my Gentoo boot disks to chroot back into the system to try and save some data. Here's hoping!

Cheers

Sam

I guess this hd is about to die. You should backup your data (as far as possible).
But don't feel shure if the error messages disappear suddenly, they will come back for shure.
A little chance is to check the IDE-Cable, or try another one.
I've lost so many hd's over the years and it always started like this.

I am going to backup my data straight away!

Whatever windows has done to the drive has allowed me to boot again, so hopefully I won't need to mess about with chroot and all that nonsense.

/var/log/messages has changed now, there are still errors but these ones are something to do with i/o errors- not a good thing I'm guessing!

I think you are right, the drive is about to die. Bah, just when I have work to do and essays to write and am too poor to buy new drives :(

Cheers

You can still use your computer when the drive fails - if you have a live CD on hand, such as knoppix and you saved all work to USB stick. :-D

Hopefully it will have Abiword and / or Openoffice, so you can continue working on your essays. :-)
