I have recently installed gentoo on the computer mentioned in the topic. The hardware works well, except the integrated soundcard. According to compaq it's supposed to be an "adi soundmax ac97" according to
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/deskpro/us/download/14501.html
Since it's integrated it doesn't seem to be pnp, and I can't get the sound to work properly. Should I just stick my old SB Awe64 gold in the box or is there some way to get this soundcard to work?
I should probably have been a bit more informative. The soundcard as far as I have been able to understand is powerd by an analouge devices ad1881, which according to the matrix at alsa-project.org is supposed to use the intel-i8x0 driver. (The motherboard in question is an i440bx, but I suppose the i8x0
just refers to the soundchip).

try to find out the correct chpset of your soundcard - to get this information use
Code:

lspci -v

Then compile your kernel with alsa support for the chipset and it should work - Since today there I've had no soundcard that didn't work with Gentoo.

it looks like your soundcard is disabled... Linux didn't detect it! Take a look at your BIOS - maybe the soundcard interface is disabled?
