| Ok Im trying to install gentoo on an IBM x40 that I just purchased. It has wireless b/g built in along with gigabit ethernet. After successfully installing gentoo on my desktop I figured I try to install it on my brand new laptop, but am having no luck. I tried doing iwconfig with no luck so I decided to try with ethernet and I am still having no luck. I set up eth0, my netmask, broadcast, and gw and I am not even able to ping my gateway. I dont know what the hell I'm doing wrong, but if anyone knows what I should do, please let me know. |

Is this from the LiveCD?
What ethernet card, and what modules are loaded?

| I am booting on the livecd but am getting stages from the internet. I am in my chrooted environment. And am not even able to get onto the internet. For some reason my settings from resolv.conf get deleted and have no way of entering and ifconfig commands. |

When you start from the LiveCD, does the ethernet work? Or does it not work correctly the moment you boot up? Also, ehat ethernet card do you have, and what modules are loaded when you boot into the machine?

| Yes the ethernet work when I boot up from the livecd. It gives me a 192.168.1.104 address, I want to give the laptop a 192.168.1.101 address but I leave it alone with the 104. As for the modules that are loaded, how do I go about detecting what modules are loaded on boot up, and how can I add these to when I chroot into my new environment. |

modules loaded can be checked with:
If the modules loaded on startup with the LiveCD (so ethernet works and you can ping your gateway and the internet) then if you follow the chrooting instructions as per the Gentoo Installation Handbook, you do not need to load the modules in the chrooted envoironment.. You may not be able to check the status of the network in the chrooted envoironment as I am uncertain if the required tools are included as part of the stage file you have started with..
