Hppa Hp 9000D (pa-risc) boot problem

When i boot from the live cd (hppa 2004.3)i get:

yes, the x86 cd doesnt boot, the hppa livecd give's this error, and dont now what other livecd to try. (its a Hp pa-risc system)

Perhaps try either an older or newer release of the PA-RISC (HPPA) Live CD?

The reason why the x86 Live CD doesn't work is mainly due to the fact the machine is a PA-RISC architecture, not x86. It's like making Mac OS X run on an IBM PC (natively I mean... not via PearPC or similar products) -- it ain't gonna happen.

but all mirrors got only 2004.3, they deleted the older verions

i'm able to boot whit the "livecd-hppa-20040513-32-64-pdc.iso" cd

only now i get:

How are you booting to the CD? I'm installing Gentoo on the same system you have, althought I'm having bootstrapping problems. To boot, I turned on the PC and held Escape with a blank drive and no CD in the drive. It booter to PALO (I think that's what it's called). Then all I had to do was type "search scsi", then it found the cdrom, and I typed "boot scsi.2.0 ipl" and she worked fine.

If I didn't get into this PALO and type exactily "boot scsi.2.0 ipl" or whatever scsi ID your CD-Rom is at, it had a kernel panic part way through loading.

After it loaded the IPL, it asks you what field you want to boot with. The default is fine, so just type "b" and hit enter. From there on, I would imagine you would be set for a normal Gentoo installation as I am aside from my bootstrap problem

im setting up a 9000/c110 system with gentoo linux, and i was having a console problem, well, i should say, it wasnt displaying correctly, but it was quickly corrected by changing the sti=8/0 info... to sti=8/3

but since you can get into the console part, this isnt the issue the issue is with the initrd possibly, make sure that the palo loader is pointed to the right places. if yuo think it isnt, then check the CD with a win9x machine, or one that works, and write down the initrd path and the vmlinux path. also is it a 32bit or 64bit processor (sorry i dont know, im very new to pa-risc based systems) my expierence is limited to what ive been doing on it for the last 8 or so hours... >.< :roll:

I have the same problem here too, with the 9000 D370. I was hoping that I would find a solution to it here... I guess we're in the same boat.

Where else can we find a solution?

edit: BTW Random, if the processor in your system is 8000 onwards, then it is PA-RISC 2.0 (64-bit capable). For example, my 9000 D370 runs one PA-8000 CPU.

OK, I tried all the above methods except a getting an older CD (I'm on dialup). None worked. What I did do though after when it hung one time was to lash out on the keyboard (in frustration =P) and it said:

Kernel panic: Kernel Fault
In interrupt handler: - not syncing

Was that from my frustration or could that be something wrong in the system?

Oh, I'm accessing this maching via serial console.

FYI, I just created a new livecd :

(This may move into experimental on mirrors soon.)

The problem you're hitting is that the mux serial driver is missing from the 2004.3 livecd.
The 2004.2 should have worked but was removed from the mirrors.

The one I posted above have this driver and hopefully should work. If it does, please report it and I'll put it as the 2005.0 official livecd.

Time for me to chime in...

I just came into an hp9000 series 800 k200 server (huge ugly monster, this is), tried a gentoo install w/livecd-hppa-20050419-rc4.iso, and got to the same(ish) place as the original poster. This box, from what I understand, needs the console to be ttyB0 (which is automatically picked up on by palo). I changed the TERM=linux line to TERM=vt100 (tried vt102 as well). I get as far as stealthgun:

Starting local [ok]
... <a few minutes roll by> ...
INIT: Id "c0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

If I then hit a key, I get a kernel panic.

As a console, I have the hp 700/96 connected. When booting, the kernel does load the mux driver, it seems, as I see it telling me it's found ttyB0 through ttyB7.

For my own purposes, I have no interest in getting the latest and greatest gentoo-hppa installed, as I'll just be using it as a starting point to compile up my own distro. So, that being said, has anyone successfully installed ANY version of gentoo-hppa on a k-class server w/the mux serial console?

OK -- replying to myself...

Mounting the livecd-hppa-20050419-rc4.iso on a loopback on an x86 box, I see that there is no ttyB-anything in zisofs/dev, and that the MAKEDEV script doesn't make the devices. Does this cd use devfsd -- does devfsd even run on hppa? And will devfsd make my ttyB* devices, even if it does run? Having no experience w/linux on hppa, I'm probably rambling like a moron here, but how about this:

I can copy the iso contents to a temporary directory, say /tmp/newiso, then "cd /tmp/newiso/zisofs/dev; mknod ttyB0 c 11 0". Can anyone give me the mkisofs command line that I'd use to repack the iso image? Not really sure what it otta be to build an hppa-bootable iso...

Would there still be work to do in zisofs/etc/inittab? Please excuse my ignorance of the gentoo livecd boot process.

OK, sounds like there is a bug there :)

I'l work on it this evening. Could you join me on irc (#gentoo-hppa on irc.freenode.net) ? That would speed the debug process a lot because I don't have any hppa using the mux driver.

with the official release

so i search the forums and found an experimantal release on dev.gentoo.org
but with that release the system hangs at:
freeing unused kernel space!

i tried an debian iso too, but no success.

if you have a system that uses the mux serial console, you should try this:

(thanks to gmsoft for that tip...)

also, you'll need to do a couple extra steps during the install:

1) when inside the chroot environment, run "mknod /dev/ttyB0 c 11 0"
2) edit inittab to reflect this serial console, instead of ttyS0

but 2 other problems!

1) i am a strange problem with /devpts. when booting, there is a message about missing dev file, so even the /dev/sda /dev/sdb are missing
only /dev/md0 that contains / is accessable?

2) i can't get smp support working, very time i boot an kernel with smp enable the system hangs at freeing kernel memory?
