Uhm i'm getting:
Code:

>>> emerge (1 of 1) kde-base/kdebase-3.4.0_rc1 to /
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) kdebase-3.4.0-rc1.tar.bz2
>>> Unpacking source...

Someone has an idea whats going wrong here? This directory indeed doesn't exists. Instead there is
a /var/tmp/portage/kdebase-3.4.0_rc1/work/kdebase-3.4.0 directory.

best regards
thomas

Just wondering.
Code:
/usr/kde/3.4/lib/kde3/plugins/designer/kdewidgets.so: Feature KRestrictedLine already defined in /usr/kde/3.3/lib/kde3/plugins/designer/kdewidgets.so!

I am seeing a lot of this during the compilation of certmanager, what does it mean? Similiar errors are given for the plastik style in the .xsession-errors file in my home dir.

Still a few packages missing but I think I have my system up to date now.

Maybe because they did not change? How do we know that?

This is still beta_2 related, forgive me.
Has anayone else lost his/her kde settings after a logout and then login again? I have some strange behaviuor here with new user accounts. First I have only a .kde dir, then after loosing the settings there suddendly was also a .kde3.4 dir, and now that I look again (not logged in in kde session, xfce4 instead) there is only a .kde3.4 dir.:?
Bye, Valentin.

try this "startkde": https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-2088124.html#2088124 and you will have $HOME/.kde only. as you can read in the thread i mentioned above, i had similar problems.
btw: dont forget to backup that startkde (if you like it) because it gets overridden if you will update to the next kde version!
btw2: if you use more then 1 KDEversion, it will be of no use for you, thouh..

I had some isues wioth startkde as, well and fixed it this way:

Make sure your settings are in .kde3.4

Delete .kde

edit starkde script and change

/bin/ln -sf .kde3.3 .kde

to

/bin/ln -sf .kde3.4 .kde

I think this is a bug in startkde script...

please read the thread i mentioned above, and read the posts by me and motaboy. yes, this is IMHO a bug, but your solution will not last very long. if you end KDE the hardway (ctrl-alt-backspace) your symlink will be changed to a REAL directory!

well, to get back ontopic here: i am still installing rc1, right now at kdebase. lets see if "startkde" has changed, and the problem is already fixed perhaps.

Hi!!
First of all sorry, because i can't speak (and write) english very well...
I just compiled kde-3.4.0_rc1 whitout problems for AMD64, but when i move my desktop icons and restart the session, kde move it and relocate where he want. Anyone have the same problem?

is it a permission file problem??

Thanks for all

Still emerging here. The only problem until now: kamera didn't want to compile, due to a missing libexif.la in /var/tmp/portage/libexif-0.5.12-r1/image/usr/lib/
I had to
Code:
ln -s /usr/lib/libexif.la libexif.la
in that directory, which I first had to create first, then it worked out fine.

hds,
I read your post and I did not quite understand what is the benefit from doing what you suggested. Maybe this is because the link to the bug report is broken.
The problem is that when you install a new version, you need to have a new .kdeX.Y folder. Also, before you get into the new kde you have to delete the .kde folder, but this is OK since it is a symlink. The problem with the new .kdeX.Y folder is that you loose all your settings. But, if you copy paste your old .kdeX.Y over the new one, then you are fine. The problem is with kmail, were you have to create your accounts again.
So, what exactly does your script do? In your post you said that you loose your settings, what is then the usefulness of your script?

I'm not sure what's going on now, I updated the other system with the released ebuilds and it seems fine but on this one that I updated before the official ebuild came out I seem to have something extra that's a dep to beta2. My only guess is something else besides konq-plugins got merged together so I have an extra rc1 ebuild on here that I shouldn't.

I'm still having the startkde issues that others mentioned and that I warned you about earlier. I think we need to have the ~/.kde folder stay intact all the time untill a different version is started so if you're always starting a kde-3.4 session then it will always stay the same, no copying/moving back and forth between .kde and .kde3.4. Now if you did start a kde-3.3 session then you could copy the "old" .kde to the "previous' version folder and copy the .kde3.3 folder to .kde. I think the problem now is that the copying/moving takes place when you log out so if kdm or whatever gets stuck only part of the cp/mv takes place.

BTW, I notified bugs.gentoo,org and the maintainer said, he fixed it minutes ago... So, I did find a real bug...

no you dont. why? and this is exactly my point!
you might want to have a seperate ".kde" folder if you run multiple versions of KDE simlutanously. i do not do so, and motaboy understood.
MasterX wrote:

it simply uses $HOME/.kde and doesnt do any symlinks anymore. and no, it is not my script. i castrated the script, thats all.

For me it was kde-i18n that wanted a downgrade to kdelibs-3.4.0_beta2, so for the moment I just uninstalled beta_2 and commented out the line I had for it in package.keywords. Thats the beginning of the ebuild:

Code:

inherit kde eutils

MY_PV=3.3.92

DESCRIPTION="KDE internationalization package"
HOMEPAGE="http://www.kde.org/"
LICENSE="GPL-2"

KEYWORDS="~x86"
IUSE=""
SLOT="${KDEMAJORVER}.${KDEMINORVER}"

need-kde ${PV}

What I meant before was that since I deinstalled all I had of kde-3.4, beta2 and rc1 from my overlay, before installing the official rc1 ebuilds emerging kmail for example pulls in as dependencies packages that are still beta_2. There I was wondering if these were packages that did not change and if that is why there are no new rc1 ebuilds for them.

Bye, Valentin.

I think that is the case, not all the packages have actually changed... I guess I'll downgrade what it saying it will and see how it goes. Seems like they could bump the version without a re-merge so the system would seem up to date.

Oh and that startkde thing is still a little funky. I don't have a symlink but from looking at the script they are using now it's back to the old way? I'm not sure about the "/bin/ln -sf .kde3.4 .kde" part coming after all the copying and moving?
Code:

# Gentoo part begins

export PATH="/usr/kde/3.4/bin:${PATH}"

# Handle ~/.kde* dirs - separate ones for separate KDEs.
# We've backtracked on the scheme where .kdeX.Y directories are temporarily
# moved to .kde.
cd ~
if [ -e .kde ]; then
        if [ ! -L .kde ]; then
                /bin/mv -f .kde .kde.backup
        else
                rm -f .kde
        fi
fi
if [ ! -e .kde3.4 ]; then
        if [ -e .kde3.3 ]; then
                /bin/cp -r .kde3.3 .kde3.4
        elif [ -e .kde3.2 ]; then
                /bin/cp -r .kde3.2 .kde3.4
        else
                /bin/mkdir .kde3.4
        fi
fi
/bin/ln -sf .kde3.3 .kde

# Gentoo part ends

This is before the "typo" fix that's been committed already but what are we linking if we are moving the directories??

Hmpf, what happened to konq-fsview? The devs changed all to konq-plugins, but it only builds the ark plugin...

*^^*

Ksvg has went awol, not sure if there's other dissappearing ebuilds. ;)

Also when I have zeroconf:/ in my location bar it shows nothing, which is ok, but in my xsession-errors is says:
Code:

kioslave: ####### CRASH ###### protocol = zeroconf pid = 13146 signal = 11
kioslave: ####### CRASH ###### protocol = zeroconf pid = 13861 signal = 11
kioslave: ####### CRASH ###### protocol = zeroconf pid = 28500 signal = 11
kioslave: ####### CRASH ###### protocol = zeroconf pid = 28529 signal = 11
kioslave: ####### CRASH ###### protocol = zeroconf pid = 7590 signal = 11

this is happening whenever the kioslave is started or refreshed. It might just be because it has nothing to do or to find.

What a nightmare this has been so far. Had to go back to beta2. First not all packages are out for the split ebuilds. kcminit, kdialog, kdebugdialog, and others are still missing. The replacement and removal of all the konq-plugins wasnt that hard to deal with.

Compiled it and was totally messed. No kwin to be found except of the intial settings wizard. kicker crashed 10 seconds into loading the desktop and no matter what I did with my .kde directory, it would retain any of my settings...just totally screwed.

Gonna have to wait I guess. I am curious about the missing ebuilds. Are they coming or are they obselete and if they are obselete how do you get them compiled into KDE using the split ebuilds? Its already been a dependency hell with this and moving around ebuilds, dumping ones and deleting others has made it all the more unstable.

Anyone get it compiled using the split ebuilds without using kde-meta? If so, what packages did you install?

I think you suffered from the startkde bug, see above. I had similar behaviour.

You might try to sync your tree up, there was some packages that were truly missing a few hours ago which caused some bad deps to pop up. The "missing" packages aren't really missing I don't think, they just haven't changed so the version wasn't bumped and the deps for them aren't version critical so you end up with a few packages labled beta2 still. If you had something in your overlay make sure you clear all of that out or you'll run into some funky deps do the changes that showed up with the official rc1 ebuilds. Also if you were having startup issues you probably got that bad startkde script that was pointing to .kde3.3 which might not exist on your system so that could cause the messed up settings.

I'm using off the top of my head kdebase-meta, kdepim-meta, kdemultimedia-meta, kdeartwork-meta. kdenetwork-meta and had no problem whatsoever so far (and my system is nearly done compiling).
Maybe you should simple sync again.

Thanks guys. I sync a few minutes ago and still dont see kcminit, kdialog, kdebugdialog, kcheckpass, kdesu, ksystraycmd.

I dont want to use the kdebase-meta because I dont want all of KDEBASE. I would rather go back to the monolith build and use the DO_NOT_COMPILE option before installing all of it. I really wanted to try and test the split ebuilds and get used to them but they are just cutting into my time with all these problems.

I dont know if it was just the kdestart bug I was suffering from but everything was just totaly unusable...I will read up on how to fix the start problem and attempt it again when I know more about those missing ebuilds. I had made my own for them so I should have had any problems...

Thanks for the help guys.

Some ebuilds have been joined together, so you are probably not missing any ebuilds at all.
