Hi,
i'm having a little problem with one of my gentoo systems.
I don't have a internet connection there, but i can download
any files and bring them onto that system. My question is:
can i still somehow emerge higher version of a program that is
not in the portage tree? [i was thinking abot downloading the
latest portage tree and install it there w/o any gentoo update of
course].

If you mean emerge newer versions of programs that you do not yet have ebuilds for - no.
You need the ebuilds since that is how Portage works.

A compressed snapshot can, however, be easily taken with you - it's around 10MB extra.
Then you can emerge any package that was present and valid at the time of the snapshot.

You can get the daily Portage snapshots from the Snapshots directory on any mirror.

As an example, let's assume that kde 3.4 is out NOW.
What should i do in order to be able to emerge kde 3.4 ?

If by out now you mean stable in portage, you would have to update the portage tree to that point before you can emerge kde 3.4.
Nothing changes that.
How you update the portage tree doesn't matter.

EDIT: sorry, I see. okay:
- update portage, with floppies if you like ;-)
- run
Code:
emerge -pv kde

then go get all those source packages, dump them in /usr/portage/distfiles, and
Code:
emerge -avk kde

then hit enter when satisfied.

That what you mean ?

Yeah ...
So when the new version if into the portage tree, all i have to do is install the latest portage snapshot.
[and of course get the files required for the new version compile].
Thanks
