This has happened to me a few times so far. I use Gnome, and just randomly X will crash, and restart leaving me with a login prompt. I can't figure out what could be causing it, but it usually happens when I am doing something. For example the last time I tried to copy text in Firefox, and this happened. In /var/log/messages I found the following line:

Interestingly, I had the same problem on Fedora (all three versions) before I switched to Gentoo. Has anyone else seen this? Could this be a hardware problem, maybe something RAM related? |

How about supplying more information like hardware, xorg.conf and xorg.log to start. _________________ Frustration leads to knowledge. |

I checked but couldn't find anything useful there. My hardware is a Tyan Tiger MPX mobo with 512 MB Kingston unbuffered PC 2100 RAM. I'm using two AMD MP 2800 procs, and a 500 watt Codegen PSU. Once I get a chance to leave my box alone for a while I will run Memtest on it. |
