Hopefully they make the new version work in 2.6.11 kernels as well. The current version refuses to load in all the 2.6.11 rc kernels I've tried.

I think there are two completely seperate departments working on the two drivers. Totally unrelated development teams. To be honest they really need to use module options or the OSS mixer interface to do this instead of having something like this. But at this point I don't care much anymore. It works and strangely enough the microphone sounds better in Linux, doesn't have the wirring noise in the background (one of my teamspeak buddies said it sounded like I was on the bridge of the Enterprise).

Also I wanted to update everyone. The last bug I was reporting to them is fixed. XMMS no longer hangs when the stream buffer underruns. I suspect they will release this one any day now. Keep checking their website.

Now that this is finished they may go to work on an ALSA module. It will likely still be a closed source module though. They seem to want to protect the IP on Soundstorm even though they are discontinuing it in their products. Doesn't make much sense, does it?

What about 5.1 sound in mplayer, and LFE in nvmixer? Are they also usable?

I don't have the speakers to test 5.1 sound. I have tested it with cloned stereo and 4 speakers and that is working.

Following the original post, i think that the community, has a big power, every time people needs something like full support for anything you have bought we should be able to press for getting support for what we have bought without having to do it ourselve. If someone sells anything he/she/it has to give full support and our way to press is sending mails and moving all together, in group. As we make them rich buying them should do it in the correct way. An that's what we all should do in all aspects, cause all people togetehr has the power that a single one doesnt have, of course for doing things in the right way :)

Just a little question, don't get mad please I'm a noob.....
But gigabyte boards with nforce3/4 have the realtek chip aboard.
I know all the defects about Realtek (I have one on my kt400 board)
but is that chip provided of hardware mixing or does it suffer
the same problem of soundstorm?

It is a simple ac'97 codec and AFAIk has no dsp unit, so no hw mixing.

I have to tell you guys I was as frustrated as anyone (check my posts at nforcer's HQ if you want to see just how frustrated) but I have been impressed with the dedication the driver team has put into fixing the bugs I have reported to them.

For those of you experiencing bugs with the 2.6 kernel (I still use the 2.4 kernel) I encourage you to work with the driver team and report these bugs. Offer to test out their drivers before release. They will send you the drivers as they are developed so they can get immediate feedback.

I don't recommend frustrating them with complaints about how they NEED to get this done. They are getting it done. I realize it has been a slow process and it isn't ALSA, but it is something. The sooner the OSS driver is stable the sooner they will work on an ALSA driver.

I have been told an ALSA driver is planned as soon as the OSS driver is done (which should be very soon).

Well, I have been talking to them, as well, and wanted them to fix the bug that one channel gets inverted. But the dev refused to accept that it is a driver bug. This is frustrating. I got no response after my last mail, so I don't know whether he fixed it or not...

Im formatting and re-installing my gentoo box this afternoon... what will be my best choice at the moment...

Use alsa with non-hardware mixing drivers, of to use OSS with the beta drivers discussed in this forum?

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_sound_mixer_aka_dmix

it enables me to mix sounds. I think its not a hw mixer, but, its doing its job since nvidia doesnt

Yep, I just installed the new driver (I just version bumped the original 292 version ebuild) and everything works fine. Flashplayer now works with sound and you no longer have to use mplayer with sdl output to get things to work (mplayer ao=oss works just fine.) Sound under Gaim still aren't perfect since the end of the sound is chopped off, but it plays at the right speed now.

Driver 1.0-0301 works great for me. Can mix now and it's finally stable enough to really use it.

As it hasn't been mentioned explicitly, from the new 1.0-0301 driver release notes-

Quote:
Added support for SoundStorm (Hardware Mixing supported)

Also

Quote:
Q: Linux distributions are moving towards ALSA as the standard sound driver architecture, but nvsound is an OSS driver. Why don't you provide an ALSA driver?

A: Our priority in shipping the nvsound driver was to provide support for nForce hardware features that were missing in the earlier nvaudio driver. NVIDIA plans to provide an nForce ALSA driver in future as our resources allow.

I am actually tempted to try this out now.

I've posted this on another thread regarding the new nforce audio drivers - has anyone tried them with Skype? For me, they just crash Skype within seconds once I start using audio. TeamSpeak, xmms, UT2004, etc all seem fine though so far.

Pretty nice drivers really!

Report to Nvidia, otherwise they can't fix it.

Well I'd like to confirm it if possible first! I had a problem with TeamSpeak with the previous drivers which just locked my machine hard - they've fixed that at least.

How do you get mplayer working? Sound flows fine, but it cant play any video. If i scroll with "->", I see some still frames.
Have latest nvsound, just emerged.

This might be another problem unrelated to the sound driver, try changing mplayer to use the sdl video output and see if that works. If that's it, a bug report has been filed both with Gentoo and mplayer, but there hasn't been any movement on it yet afaik.

You could try giving xine a go, I've always preferred it to mplayer. I do use mplayerplug-in, and it needed to be modified to use sdl as well.

Thanks, agent_jdh. I'll give that sdl videooutput a try when I'm home for sure. But xine seems to crash strangely, so I don't use it right now. I will investigate the problems though.
