Hi

I've installed 2004.3, and came upon a problem:
I can't load nvidia kernel module:
I've emerged nvidia-glx.
when I try modprobe nvidia, i get
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.9-gentoo-r1/video/nvidia.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
dmesg | grep nvidia gfives me:
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
nvidia: Unknown symbol __VMALLOC_RESERVE
nvidia: Unknown symbol __VMALLOC_RESERVE

What should I do? Can I recompile nvidia module? If yeh, how?

Thanx in advance

Shoki

Do "emerge nvidia-kernel" again and see if that fixes it.

seems like you've just emerged nvidia-glx. You need nvidia-kernel too!

No, I've emerged nvidia-kernel long ago, during the instalation.
And, nvidia-faq said that nvidia-glx depends on nvidia-kernel, so it would get installed anyway.

And I've tryed reemerging both nvidia ebuilds. No luck.

I'll try installing original nvidia drivers.

thanx!

Is the kernel you are currently running the same as the one that /usr/src/linux points to?

I have this problem too.

I am doing a GRP install from the 2004.3 universal cd.
I have emerge both nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx.

I have just reinstalled gentoo (2004.3) and still cannot load the nvidia module.
I have only been using the one kernel (2.6.9-gentoo-r1), so no version differences.
Can anyone explain what this error means, and how to resolve it?

Try a newer kernel.

May be you compiled nvidia drivers and kernel using different gcc vercions?
This can cause problems. See more at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=65152

I had similar problem whith 2.6.9 kernel, so upgrading the kernel is a good idea.

How could I have used 2 different versions of gcc? I am installing with GRP from the universal cd and package cd. I haven't even sync'd yet.
