It sure would be nice for the final 1.4 release to be consistent in the spelling of "dependency". Some places use dependency and others use dependancy. Even though dependancy is shown in the dictionary as an alternative spelling I believe dependency is the more correct spelling (at least the one I've seen all my life).

Moving thread from Portage & Programming to Gentoo Chat.
Also if you really are that concerned/upset about it you should file an official bug report about it to get it 'fixed.'

Oh and just in homage to your avatar and your location I will quote . . .
"Blame Canada, Blame Canada!"
Sorry just couldn't resist it.

I love that movie.
I have filed a bug.
And, being Canadian, I will accept the blame and humbly and profusely apologize for whatever it is we did. |

I've been waiting to hear that for a long time. It's like those people from Canadia have some kind of dependancy or something.. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Methinks "dependancy" is the British spelling and "dependency" is the American spelling. I recently read my first Jane Austen novel and this was driving me up the wall until I realized that the proofreaders hadn't (repeatedly) missed something. (The novel was pretty good, in case you were wondering. Highly recommended while waiting for your stages 1 and 2 to finish.)

American english it terrible.
It's a biscuit, not a cookie.
It's jam, not jelly. Jelly is that wobbly, translucent stuff that never fills you up.
It's pronounced 'zed' not 'zee'. Did you just want 'XYZ' to rhyme with 'ABC'?
It's 'ised' not 'ized' <- this was the most petty change of them all! Why did Americans do this? The others can go down as coloquial, but this is plain abuse of the English language.
I'd better stop before I get myself into a bad mood.

Hold it, you guys. I wasn't criticizing British spelling, only pointing out a possible reason for both spellings appearing in the code. This isn't Slashdot and I don't want to be part of a flame war. If there was a way for me to go back and delete my posting, I'd do so.
EDIT:
Bonez is right, of course (see two posts down). Apologies for getting defensive too quickly.

Since this is in Gentoo Chat I guess it really doesn't need to stay strictly on the topic (or maybe it should.) But I have always been intruiged with Grey vs. Gray. Personally I like Grey, but I wonder if this is a regional sort of thing too-- Anyone happen to know? Perhaps we should split this whole topic off the original thread and spin it into Off The Wall though.

I don't think anyone is upset, I thought this was all just fun. If anyone is really trying to turn this into a flame war we can just call the whole thing off and lock the thread. Currently though I don't think anyone is upset. Maybe I am "out of touch" and another Mod might consider this to be out of bounds. Raluke if you feel things are going badly just back away from the thread and do nothing more with it. I am almost certain though that GuruSwami and charlieg were both poking fun at American English and were not in any way attacking any person. I sure hope I am right!

It's common knowledge that criminals and financially wrecked people fled to America, isn't it?
The story goes, there was an election, whether to speak Dutch or English. Pro-English went campaigning (is that a word?), the Pro-Dutch didn't. The Pro-English won by one vote.
I'm Dutch
Yes, okay, I'm English too.
But I live in Holland!
(And that's not the capital of Denmark. And we don't live in windmills.. Most of us don't... What was this topic about again? ) |

That's like asking why do you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway. |

Sorry to shatter yet another urban legend, iKiddo, but the truth is much more boring:
Quote: | The event that generated this confusion was a petition to the U.S. Congress by Virginia Germans who sought the printing of all federal laws in their language as well as English. In 1795, the proposal failed in the House of Representatives, 42 to 41, with Speaker Friedrich A. Muhlenberg, a Pennsylvania German, apparently casting the deciding vote. Federal documents continued to be published in German, but on an ad hoc basis. The tale that German nearly became our official language apparently originated with nineteenth century adherents of Deutschtum, or German American cultural nationalism, and was given new life by Ripley's Believe It or Not in the 1930s. See Heinz Kloss, The American Bilingual Tradition (Rowley, Mass.: Newbury House, 1977), pp. 26-33. | Source: Bilingualism in America: A Forgotten Legacy
None of this answers the question why Americans would put on 20 kilograms [*] of equipment before they go play rugby, of course.
[*]The metric system got officially adopted in the US in 1893... |
