I'm installing gentoo on a brand-new laptop, and I've run into a problem.

I've compiled everything up from stage 1, and now I've switched from gcc 3.3.5 to 3.4.3.20050110-r1 I then changed the march cflag to read pentium-m. I recompiled gcc with no problems, and managed to compile linux26-headers and glibc just fine too.

Now I'm trying to emerge gnome, but I get an error on the very first package it tries to compile

Code:
>>> emerge (1 of 190) media-libs/libpng-1.2.8 to /
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) libpng-1.2.8.tar.bz2
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking libpng-1.2.8.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/libpng-1.2.8/work

I've got to admit that I'm stumped...any thoughts?

Have you changed your compiler using gcc-config?

If you do, don't forget to do source /etc/profile afterwards
