I just got ut2004 and decided to install it on my gentoo box. I decided to install via "emerge ut2004". The emerge file said it required around 8 gigs which I had in /opt but it didn't mention that it needed that space on various directories. (namely /var/tmp) I didn't have that much space available on /var/tmp so the install failed. I instead installed it via the shell script located on cd1 and it seemed to work fine.

The problem seems to be that portage seems geared for much smaller packages. When setting up partitions they don't recommend 8G+ for tmp directories. Maybe if ut2004 (now ut2004-data) was just a virtual package that relied on ut2004-cd1, ut-2004-cd2, etc.

I suppose if you have one big partition for / and no other partitions then this wouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, the shell install worked fine for me. I just wanted to mention the emerge problem.

Robert.

You could temporarily specify an alternate temp directory on a partition that has enough disk space in make.conf.

Thanks for the tip.

Any idea how to specify a temporary tmp directory to portage? I know you mentioned make.conf but I don't see any tmp dir settings.

Does anyone know if ut2004 gets installed in /opt or /usr ?

Robert.

You can just mount another partition with enough space (thats not being used) to /var/tmp using this command:
Code:
mount /dev/(partition with space) /var/tmp
as root, but it must not be mounted somewhere else, if you dont have one then you can remove tmp folder and make folder tmp on some other partition thats mounted and then symlink that to /var/tmp, but dont forget to remove the folder you created on the other partition and the symlink and create a normal folder /var/tmp again when done.

It installs into /opt (at least using portage method)

Add this setting to make.conf (man make.conf for more settings):
Code:
PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/somedir/onsomepartition/withalotofspace"

I would recomment going around portage to install ut2k4.

the reason is this: when there is a patch for ut2k4 (and there have been about 5 already) portage will want to wipe the current ut2k4 install out completely and then reinstall the whole thing(this includes you providing the installation cd's one at a time again) THEN patch it. Portage is not designed to handle patching apparently.

What i did was install ut2k4 by hand (same with doom 3) then update with the patches manually.

btw. the default install of ut2k4 should only be around 4.7-5 GB

This is not true anymore (at least not for the ~x86 version) there is now a separate data install that just installs the data files. And updates that install the patches.
