Sorry if this is the wrong section, its the only place i can think of.

Basically, i have problems with the time of my PC... I dual boot with Windows, so heres the problem:

Windows sets the right time, i go to gentoo to find it time is one hour ahead of the real time... If i change it to the real time in gentoo, its one hour behind next time i start windows.

This all started when i had problems with gdesklets setting the right time on the clocks on it, so i set the /etc/localtime to be the zone info for Europe/London, because this seemed to fix the gdesklet clock being one hour behind problem...

Basically, i think all i need to know is what timezone should i set /etc/localtime too, so that windows and linux both show the correct time.

Im in england, which is currently in DST. (BST - British Summer Time)...

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

-Raz

If you don't boot into Windows that often, why don't you completely disable any automatic time changes and just manually change it from Linux? Once you've gotten the time to stop fluctuating, then you should let your primary operating system handle any automatic changes. Since I only use Gentoo on my system, I sync with a timeserver using NTP. After this weekend, I'll see how well it adjusts to daylight savings time. (It's an experiment of mine!)

You can probably change the time by changing the timezone symlink, actually, but I haven't tried that yet.

Changed what i was searching for and managed to find a refrence to clock in rc.conf, so i prodded around, changed it to CLOCK="local" and now its happy.. I can just change it manually twice a year, unless i'm in windows when the change happens, and it fixes itself :P

I reinstalled gentoo yesturday (i'm still learning linux, i wanted to do a complete install from scratch to see if i could manage it without having to follow a manual step by step), so i'm still not sure if gdesklets will handle it properly.. we'll see in a few hours!

Thanks for your help :)

Ok you've changed the rc.conf CLOCK to local which is the first part, I assume you restarted the /etc/init.d/clock daemon after making that change.

The second bit you need to do is make sure that your /etc/localtime is a symlink to /usr/share/zoneinfo/GB. Then just sync to a uk timeserver (i.e. /usr/bin/ntpdate bear.zoo.bt.co.uk) and you should be at the right time.

I hope that helps.
