Hi,
I have just build a cheap computer to use as a fileserver and decided to install Gentoo on it (I already have a desktop running it). So, I booted the 2005.0 CD, but there are all these wierd Panics and segfaults when compiling or doing random things. There was one when I ran e2fsck. So, I thought maybe it was my memory (256mb PC3200) so I ran memtest86 for a couple hours. But it reported no errors. So I figured it was my CPU, AMD Duron 1.8ghz DHD1800DLV1C. I tried underclocking and I tried various other things, including lower the CFlags to i386, but nothing compiles. I have even tried installing a spare Slackware 10 CD I found, but even that fail. I am pretty convinced it is the CPU, and since I never overclocked it it is still under warranty, so I will probably exchange it.
What do you guys think??

O ya I'm running this on an MSI K7N2 Delta2-LSR

It can be the CPU, but it could also be the motherboard. I saw many IBM PCs with motherboard problems which caused them to crash occasionally. I think that your problem probably comes from your motherboard, not from the CPU (based on the experience I had with this kind of problems). I would like to see what other people think about your issue though. Anyway, it’s much easier to try another CPU than to try another motherboard(!)

Could it also be power? It has a 400W Power Supply but I just noticed my LCD monitor (running my other Comp) was blinking sort of, and when I shutdown this computer it stopped. Could not enough power be a problem?

I *never* saw this kind of problem being caused by a defect power supply. You could try again some tests without that other computer (or other devices) running at the same time so that your Gentoo box will have all the power for itself...

Yes, it is not the powersupply, as I tried at the dead of night and it still segfaults. I may try and find some more memory just to check and see, then If that doesnt work, try and get a new CPU.
