As I have heard many scary things about using emerge -world, I thought I was ask if using the switches:

Code:
emerge -UD world

... would cause me any grief regarding lost data, crippled system etc? Does this switch simply decend into the system libraries and update them to the latest package? Is this the same as:

Code:
glsa-check -f all

Okay, I wasn't sure if you wanted a good reason or not. Some people just want a quick answer and I didn't want to explain it if you didn't care.

glsa-check only updates packages with security fixes.
you shouldn't use -U because it won't downgrade packages even if they are broken or have major flaws.

I have never had a problem with -uD but make sure you test new versions before applying them to production servers.

Well I have never used the "world" functions of Gentoo out of absolute fear! Are you saying that:

Code:
emerge -uDva world

Is ok and will not cause any issues?

The option "a" will prompt you for an answer for each package. You can choose to install it or not install it... If you don't use that option, the emerge will upgrade everything which is not a good idea. I believe that's what BWoso meant!

OK. But with so many hundreds of individual packages, will this not be a labour intensive process?

Why not use this command then...
Code:
emerge -pv -u world

I am assuming that this will not give me any nasty surprises? I have just managed to resolve the authdaemon issue with Courier-imap after an update yesterday afternoon!

-a doesn't ask for each individual package.
It lists what it will update (just like using -p), then asks if you want to continue. It was made to save time so that you don't have to do emerge -puDv world then emerge -uDv world, which would calculate dependencies twice.
