ppp dialout doesn't work with mgettty

Running mgetty 1.1.31 & pppd 2.4.3 on a client machine & trying to dial out to a remote server. When I try dialing out with mgetty running, it doesn't work. When I look at the mgetty logs, it looks like mgetty on the dialout machine is trying to set a lock, but is prevented by the pppd daemon. When I stop mgetty, the dialout works fine.

The machines are trying to place their locks in the same location & all references to the modem port (/dev/ttyS3) are the same.

I'm thinking of manually running mgetty & taking down when I need to dial out, but that's messy. Any one got any ideas?
