Well, I'm of the 'rc-update add zetagrid default' school, too. I deleted "/bin/" from that line in the script on my notebook, and have rebooted twice since then already. No problems whatsoever, Zetagrid gets fired up during the system start and runs as smoothly as ever. The rest of the script only calls grep directly, never /bin/grep, that's only the first call... Isn't it automatically $path/grep, no matter when that script gets kicked off?
Doesn't answer why grep wants to be in /usr/bin on this machine, though. In BSD it does, I know that much...
EDIT: Split the discussion about the stray grep to here.... |

The reason being quite simply that on that particular machine, grep doesn't reside in /bin, but in /usr/bin... |
Another ebuilder was asking how to include JAVA_HOME environment in a rc-script a few days ago in this thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=37673&highlight=
I gave him a hint to use zetagrid's hack. Maybe there's another way to do it, not using grep at all. After all, the hack is somehow rude. |

It used to work but now somethings broke. I rsynced and emerged and apparently it hasn't worked on my machine since the 24th... Even manally starting it doesn't seem to start it again.
cd /opt/zetagrid
./zeta.sh
Use to start it.
I guess I'm going to have to read over the 11 pages of this thread to figure out why. |

The problem appears to be that the #!/sbin/runscript line is not the first line of the init script. I've submitted this to bugzilla, so it should be taken care of soon. In the meantime, you can just move that line to the top of the file, and it should be OK.
**UPDATE**
This has been fixed in the -r8 release of zetagrid. |

Hi everbody... my two computer are joining too (just during the night)... long life to Gentoo
I have just a question... why is there not more information about this project on gentoo.org... I found the information on gentoofr.org (francophone gentoo information websit) ?
And if I put my name instead of Michael Imhof (in the config file) , but with the same team... does it
help Michael Imhof... (gentoo team) ? or will it be a new calculator alone ?
bye,

Don't do that. We are Michael Imhof. If you put your own name in there, it's not counted towards the person, and that's the only thing that's important. The team doesn't mean anything because the price money will only go to individuals. |

Where do you think Michael Imhof's other 170 workstations come from? Count the hostnames... |

The two laziest/slowest are from me.
A PPC G3 B/W who did a half default unit per day, perf index around 2 and a PII 350 who does a quadruple work as the ppc,
about max. two units per day.
But every zero counts. Attention at Nicholas Henke, a bunch of work units the last 24hours.

Some of those accounts (like mine) are defunct. I haven't used my own name since we changed the policy in this thread a few pages ago, and many others registered first with their own name, too, but have switched since then. For the rest, I suppose they don't read the FAQ or haven't caught on to the fact that resistance is futile. I can't believe anybody deliberately resists assimilation?
By the way, zendron, my beige G3 is certainly slower than your G3 b/w... Half a unit a day? A dream! |

I'm proud to announce that we reached rank
#10
in the zetagrid stats.
So keep crunching and try to assimilate as many as possible!
Thanks to all participants who helped us to get where we are

It seems that we lost some contributors within the last week.
Please help gentoo and join our team!

Zetagrid has stopped working for me (simon.cooper.local), the java processes show up in ps -a but the cpu usage stays firmly at 0%, the only thing ive done is upgrade to kernel 2.5.xx... _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

found the problem:
the problem is the new gentoo hostname setting, getLocalHost() now returns only the machine name and not the FQDN.
bugs.gentoo.org time I think

Someone update the thread title, please! It's going to take all we can muster to even hope for getting to number 2, so the more visibility the collective has, the better _________________ Vogon poetry is of course the third worst in the Universe. -- Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy |

I've been out of the race for the past two weeks, sorry about that. All my computers are on a container ship on their way to good old Europe, except for this one, and I can't prove Riemann's hypothesis while Java is burning a hole in the case because the bloody notebook isn't built for that sort of thing...
Can someone explain today's statistics to me? Only 58 hosts in the past 24 hours, 120 in the past 7 days, but 315 in total? Is something wrong? Still that hostname issue? |

Well, as for the last 24 hours, I'm not sure what's up with that. But for quite a bit of the past week I was unable to transmit/receive work units. I suspect that quite a few of the GLUE team were in my position: no incomplete work units to compute and no way to get more. I've upped my number requested to 5 to cover those periods when it seems impossible to transmit/receive, and it looks like others have done similar things. Anyone else care to put forth hypotheses? _________________ Vogon poetry is of course the third worst in the Universe. -- Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy |

I've been running Zetagrid for about 46 days now, and have done some emerge syncs in that timespan but not updating world, so I guess I've managed to avoid the hostname issue on my box. During that time, though, there have been days where the Zetagrid statistics pages have been unavailable; in fact, right now I'm getting internal server errors when trying to look at the Top Producer stats or even the top-level Statistics page. I haven't seen anyone mentioning this issue on the Zetagrid boards (which frequently are also unavailable at the same time) nor here, so I'm beginning to wonder... am I the only one having that problem??? _________________ Vogon poetry is of course the third worst in the Universe. -- Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy |
