ok i finally saw the screen with the 'fancy logo' on it and i started configuring what i could. but the thing was i was using a install guide that was a general guide that had stuff for a 3 stages. i am jusing the 3rd. I started to configure stuff that i didnt need to and ended up not working.
So my question would be when the crap do i get to the GUI?! GUI's are my friend. i know that code is more powerful but i like my easy to use GUI's. |

The shortest route to a GUI is to complete the Installation Guide as you have already been doing, and then to go through the Desktop Configuration Guide.
When 1.4 final comes out, there will be a quicker way to install binary packages directly from the CD, but for now, you have to first complete the Installation Guide. This gives you a basic working Linux system with just a terminal window - no GUI. Then you have to emerge your desktop of choice - usually either KDE or Gnome - that's what the Desktop Configuration Guide takes you through. I'd advise you to follow these two guides closely. It takes a few days to get a Gentoo system fully built, so be patient. |

you can have GUI after you have installed everything. There is no GUI install in Gentoo.
Once you have configured and compiled your kernel (the kernel config is as close to "GUI" you will get with ncurses colour menus in the console), and you have emerged xfree and you have emerged something like Window Maker or Fluxbox (I recommend those to start with because they'll install in a couple of minutes instead of hours/days like KDE and Gnome).
Once you have done that, then you can go into X and get your GUI. This isntallation isn't recommended for someone that needs or requires a mouse to install, just because that is the nature of how Gentoo is built. Sorry.
But once you get this far, which is what I do, then install everything else. I just get the system up and running with the minimums, boot and start X, then install components one by one. |

Hi,
But its kinda "non-newbie"...Example...I have a USB mouse and what does the doc say? :
"The first thing that has to be done is the installation of the kernel modules. The modules that will be needed for a USB mouse to work are usbmouse, mousedev, hid, usbcore, usb-uhci, and input. After the necessary kernel configuration is done, insmod the modules."
Uh...I havent got the faintest clue how to configure these modules...Where as the installation docs can be followed by a newbie, the Desktop Configuration cannot Imho...
Too bad, cause once you get into KDE og whatever things starts getting a bit more easier...
regards,
Supermule |

All the Gentoo documentation is contributed on a volunteer basis. If you think you can improve on it, please do so so that we can all benefit! |
