hi all, just finished emerging xorg, but when i try to run Xorg -configure it fails out with a "no core pointer; failed to intialize core devices error". I'm using a cordless optical USB mouse on the 2.6 kernel. I have referenced another thread in the forum about this problem, but i'm not quite sure how to execute the solution found in it.

here is that other thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-326275-highlight-usb+detected.html

any help?

UPDATE: before i did cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf the mouse seemed to be working fine when i typed X or startx

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Code:
nano -w /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Find the section for input device and change as follows

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Mouse0"
        Driver      "mouse"
        Option      "Protocol" "auto"
        Option      "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
EndSection

If you have a scroll wheel, add the following just before the 'EndSection' line
Code:
Option      "ZAxisMapping"      "4 5"

You need to have usb HID support in the kernel. Try typing
Code:
cat /dev/input/mice
If you get garbage when you move the mouse then it is set up correctly.

Check that your kernel can see your mouse

Code:

# cat /proc/bus/input/devices

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0001 Product=0001 Version=ab41
N: Name="AT Translated Set 2 keyboard"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio0/input0
H: Handlers=kbd
B: EV=120013
B: KEY=4 2000000 3802078 f840d001 f2ffffdf ffefffff ffffffff fffffffe
B: MSC=10
B: LED=7

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0005 Version=0000
N: Name="ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0
H: Handlers=mouse0
B: EV=7
B: KEY=70000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: REL=103

I have this same problem.
Code:
cat /proc/bus/input/devices

says that I have a mouse and the handler is mouse0
but......
Code:
cat /dev/inputs/mouse0

reveals nothing at all.

thanks -M@[/code]

just out of curiosity, do you have a MX700 mouse? There is a huge thread on in the Kernel and Hardware forum that discuss this particular mouse.

Try this:
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Mouse0"
        Driver      "mouse"
        Option      "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
        Option      "Device" "/dev/input/mouse0"
        Option      "ZAxisMapping"      "4 5"
EndSection
