Hi, which codec do I have to install on an AMD64-installation to watch windows media video files (WMV)? I have emerged the win32codecs and Divx and stuff works, but not WMV.

This may sound flippant, but did you try emerging mplayer? It can play WMV files.

Yes, I've tried mplayer, kmplayer and gxine. *mplayer just shows a blank screen, gxine pops up a message about unknown format. No special USE flags to define before emerging mplayer? I had it working perfectly with all players in my old athlon-xp-install!

Not all codecs are playable in amd64, being a 64bits os and all. I find nearly all wmv-files to be troublesome. Simular to the flash-issue, I would imagine that untill more codecs are 64-compatible there will be problems.

You could try to setup a 32-bit chroot for a 32-bits mplayer and its codecs, or try running this mplayer setup

Hmmm... that thread orgigins from the time when win32codecs was hard-masked in portage... I emerged the ~amd64-ebuild a couple of weeks ago. I don't think it's worth to make a 32-bit chroot environment or install 32-bits mplayer, so I guess I'll just have to wait for enhanced codecs!

The very latest win32codecs works nicely with the latest versions of (64 bit) mplayer and (64 bit) mplayerplug-in. I can play WMV files full screen with fairly low CPU useage as well as QuickTime movies.

Also the very latest verion of xine-lib is working great on my machine in 64 bit.

Yes, as I wrote before I have the ~amd64-marked win32codecs installed. Now I've been testing several WMV files, and mplayer only have problem with some of them. BUT, these WMV's worked excellent on my previous ~x86 machine.

Isn't it "win32codecs"?

wmv is NOT a USE flag for win32codecs.

Im not even on AMD64, but Im having problems playing WMV files lately too.

Dunno when this started, but all I get when I try to play a wmv is, sound and:
Code:

Didnt change the USE flags of mplayer or anything else, did mplayer get some new USE flag which I need to set??

/edit
great, I love it
I just updated world, and it works again, no clue why

I am not having any problems with WMV files. I get picture and sound. I do not get sound on QuickTime movies however, at least on the ones I have tried.

Try setting the following in /etc/portage/package.use

media-video/mplayer win32codecs

and then re-emerge mplayer. Seems the win32codes USE flag now needs to be enabled for mplayer to have wmv support, and this wasn't the case the last time I played a wmv...

Correct. The stable xine-lib + ffmpeg do not work on .mov or .wmv (version 3).
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-335179-highlight-xinelib+ffmpeg.html
Doesn't matter if you use buit-in ffmpeg or try to compile with external ffmpeg.

ffplay can play .wmv version 3, but barely---it can't keep audio/video sync very well!

I just had the same problem and hacked a fix; here it is, for the record.

(Note: I am using AMD64 with mplayer-bin emerged.)

Trying to play WMV files was suddenly audio-only, with the following error:
Code:
Opening video decoder: [dmo] DMO video codecs
Win32 LoadLibrary failed to load: wmv9dmod.dll, /usr/lib/win32/wmv9dmod.dll, /usr/local/lib/win32/wmv9dmod.dll

I noticed that while I do have wmv9dmod.dll (courtesy of win32codecs), it was in the directory /usr/lib32/win32/, while mplayer was looking for it in other locations (the local dir, /usr/lib/win32/, and /usr/local/lib/win32/.) My /usr/lib/ is symlinked to /usr/lib64/.

So I created a new symlink:
Code:
$ ln -s /usr/lib32/win32 /usr/lib/win32
$ ll /usr/lib/win32*
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 16 Mar 20 13:55 /usr/lib/win32 -> /usr/lib32/win32

... and now it works.

I had the same probelm and here is the solution that I found:

- win32codecs can't work on 64b video engine so I:
- emerged xine (it has been compiled for my 64b arch)
- emerged mplayer-bin with win32codecs USE (it is special ebuild for amd64 compiled for 32b and it can work with win32codecs)
- win32codecs emerged as pretend for mpalyer-bin
- emerged kmplayer (kMplayer is a gui which can change during work - by pressing button - your video engine xine or mplayer)
- now I use my 64 b xine with kmplayer when I watch divix and mplayer-bin with kmplayer when I watch wmv, qt and so on
- only problem was that kmplayer is looking for mplayer file to run and you haven't got one, there is mplayer-bin (simply create a symlink)

You can of course use only mplayer-bin but I already have 64 xine and I like caffeine and it works only with xine so now I use both and can wait for win64codecs.

sorry for my pure english, hope you understand it

I don't want to prove you all wrong,

but on my rig, just emerging this ~amd64 masked mplayer-bin just does the trick.

anyway, thanks to madey for giving me the hint to emerge that one ...

:]

If you google around the DVD Jon cracked WMV3 and wrote a plugin for VLC, which is currently being put into the next version of VLC. This was awhile ago so im not sure what happened to it
