the topic text box in the "post new topic" form lets you type more than is displayed once the post is submitted.

It's limited to 60 characters. The input-type definition also defines that so that the browser should not allow the user to enter more than 60 characters. What Browser are you using?

This only annoys me w.r.t. the GLSAs which sometimes are not very clear given the limit.

the original subject i entered in that post was 'kernel message "irq 6 nobody cared" when floppy is disabled'. i'm not sure why "disabled" was cut off. it's not happening right now.

This is not a browser issue. It's a phpbb thing. Subjects are limited to 60 characters.

if the browser doesn't follow html standards, then it could be a browser issue (which is why i'm testing with firefox). i think it's being caused by a disagreement between the html and phpbb code, but somehow it's not consistant. nothing's changing on my side.

No, it's really a phpbb thing. The thread subjects are stored hacked off to a 60 character limit as ian! said earlier, so it should be impossible to go to any of those links and see a thread subject longer than that. Here's a description of how it could be changed to 120 with a few changes: http://www.phpbbhacks.com/forums/archive/o_t/t_29612/increase_possible_subject_length.html

here's the problem:
Quote:
the topic text box in the "post new topic" form lets you type more than is displayed once the post is submitted.

so it's allowing me to type 60 characters, but it's being truncated to 50 characters. example: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-312414-highlight-.html

I'm also unable to repeat this bug with any version of firefox. I can't say that I know for sure about elinks.

Code:

Your message is trundcated at 50 characters. No clue why. Everything I've seen or been able to reproduce has been like the second example.

The problem is that certain characters are converted before the 60 character limit is imposed. The following characters are converted:

" :arrow: "
& :arrow: &
> :arrow: >
< :arrow: $lt;
