My monitor(flat panel 17" LCD) would turn on and then flicker off to black everytime I turned it on about 10 minutes ago. I turned it off for about 3 mins and then tried again and it still wouldn't work. After leaving it off for another 5 minutes I tried again and this time it worked fine. Is there a possibility that my xorg(vertical+horizontal refresh rate) settings were damaging the monitor? Is my monitor dying?

I've uncommented those lines now and it seems as if it is working... I'm not sure how long it's going to last though. Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

The use of incorrect values when it comes to refresh rates con allways damege your monitor. Nowadayes most devices are protected, that way it is very hard to break anything, but there is allways a chance that you can break it.

The best thing to avoid headaches is to look into the manufacturers website and check the refresh rates for your device, then you need to set it correctly, not only in xorg, but also in any other video driver you are using, for example with something like 'video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-24@60' in your grub.conf kernel line. This example is only needed in case you are using framebuffer in your console.

Ive seen from blank screen to misaligned ones when this value was incorrect. Probably a longer use of a wrong value could, maybe, have fried one of that screen, i did not wait to see it.
