Good day,
I tried hard to install gentoo into my Toshiba satellite laptop. I'm facing some problems connecting to mirrors nearby when i tried to emerge gentoo-sources. Everything went fine, but when i reached step no 7[configuring the kernel]. My questions is there any way to emerge gentoo-sources without internet connection? Or where is the fastest mirrors around? I still can't connecting to the mirrors for almost 3 days.
If i have to download the files [gentoo-sources] first and store it somewhere [let's say in my thumb drive] how can i emerge it during my installations?
help me plz. |

When you emerge the genkernel it does two things:
- download the kernel from kernel.org (or a mirror, I don't know)
- download some patches from the gentoo mirror.
If the first step fails you can always try to download the +-30MB file manually from www.kernel.org or one or its mirrors, and have to put the file into /usr/portage/distfiles, then try emerge gentoo-sources again.
But even then, you will still have to download some patches, coming from your gentoo-mirror.
It seems weird to me you cannot contact it through portage, so you're probably suffering another problem. Are you having other connectivity problems as well?
Regards, |

Hi dr_rude,
the manual recommends:
Code: | mirrorselect -i -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf |
but don't do that! In some cases mirrorselect choice URLs with low speed or deprecated.
Make:
1) open mirrors list:
Code: | links2 http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml |
2) it enters in several mirrors and it sees which is fastest to load the folder /destfiles. It writes 4 or 5.
3) open the /etc/make.conf and put an line:
Code: | GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.las.ic.unicamp.br/pub/gentoo/ ftp://cs.ubishops.ca/pub/gentoo/" |
this is an example.
Ok, its must be works ok. |

gesiel,
i do not do the mirrorselect -i -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf as the manual recommends.
i edited manually make.conf file and enter the nearest mirrors as a content for GENTOO_MIRRORS variables.
i still can't get thru from here.
any ideas? i really need to learn tis gentoo! |

You don't have to use his preferred mirrors... What's your location? Does ping work? Try 'ping ophidian.be' and 'ping gearbox.be' and 'ping gonda.exigo.ch' |

Just forget about the kernel for a second. You first need to get your network working. Are you currently connected to a network but somehow can't get out or your computer is completely by itself? Otherwise, you can always use another computer to download the kernel and copy it to your computer... |

I dont know if my card is supported (atheros AR5212 chipset ) . WHen is do lspci it shows it in listing but i cannot make it work.
I do have a fedora core 2 installed on other partision and windows on another one.
I did try to download the kernel gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r3 and copy it into /usr/portage/distfiles/ and than run emerge gentoo-sources , but it still tries to connect to the internet.
WHen i do PKGDIR=/usr/portage/distfiles/ and then try to emerge it says that i need to adjust PKGDIR .....
When i try to emerge with full path ie: emerge /usr/portage/distfiles/gentoo-sources-2.6..... it says that the path is broken...
i do not know what to try next ? |

Is it a wireless network chipset? If true, try emerging the madwifi-driver _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |

Did you do the ping BEFORE or AFTER you chrooted?
Because it's quite possible that you forgot to run "cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf"
Without that file you will never (and I mean never) be able to get to a website/url by name rather than IP. |

arite tis is my make.conf file looks like:-
CFLAGS="-02 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mymirrors.asiaosc.org/gentoo/ http://distfiles.gentoo.org ftp://cs.ubishops.ca/pub/gentoo/"
SYNC="rsync://rsync.asia.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage
i'm using stage3 installations.
note:- i'm adding the GENTOO_MIRRORS manually at make.conf after failed to use "mirrorselect -i -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf" command. the errors saying :-
downloading a list of mirrors...
unable to fetch a valid list of mirrors, update failed.

Are you sure you have mounted with the -o bind option both /dev and /proc before chrooting into your gentoo install?
Can you ping these mirrors if you are outside of your chroot? _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |

The -o bind is another way of mounting it.
If your resolv.conf is correct, you can ping outside the chrooted environment and not inside it, I just can't think of other problems that may cause this issue. _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |

Make sure you've copied resolv.conf over to the chroot as resolv.conf and not resolve.conf _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Help answer the unanswered
