Portage is the best package management system I ever seen.
but its not the best reason I like gentoo.
my best reason for now is forums.gentoo.org!!
where you always go search.php and solutions there! _________________ "Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent" - Marilyn vos Savant

Poor, poor, Larry The Cow...
Gentoo is addictive! And I like the fact that the bug reports are handled by developers and maintainers in a timely manner. Well, kinda. _________________ The geeks | Recommended Packages fOr Desktop & Server | Read BBCode Guide! |

Portage, system configuration tools are sheer genius, very polished, well thought out distro with nothing more than you need. Docs are the best I have ever seen, to date. _________________ "Amongst all things, knowledge is truly the best thing: from it's not being liable ever to be stolen, from it's not being purchasable, and from it's being imperishable." |

1. It let's me optimize the computer like never before.
2. All non distro specific reasons (Windows - spyware, viruses, slugginesh etc)
3. More control.
4. RC-scripts
5. Portage
6. Learning. - I've never learnt so much about linux with any other distro. I was scared about the current installation method but now I see the advantages it brings.
7. Upgrading. No need to reinstall the whole OS, just upgrade the profile . |
