I screwed something up! please help.

ok everything worked fine and I did:

emerge --sync
emerge --update --newuse world

then I rebooted. now it boots up, starts x and starts my kde splash. the splash gets as far as the third step "initializing peripherals" then it just disapears and I have a blank screen with a mouse. no desktop or icons or menu. like x with no wm. what did I do wrong? what other info do I need to post for someone to help me?

sounds like you might have replaced your rc.conf file. Check to see if your rc.conf still initializes kde if not make sure that it does.

I have the exact same problem. In addition to the problem with KDE, Fluxbox loads without the menu and bottom bar. I checked rc.conf and it is just how I left it.

If you upgraded to the new baselayout (1.11 was finally mark x86), a lot of config files were moved into /etc/conf.d, and a lot of the settings in /etc/rc.conf are now in /etc/conf.d/rc (but of course, you read through the etc-update output very carefully before updating, so you already know this, right? )

The settings that I have defined in rc.conf are the ones that stayed in that file even with the baselayout update.

/dev/null: Permission Denied is causing this. Everything comes up when logging in as root. This is probably something with udev. I migrated from devfs to udev on this laptop and I remember updating udev on my last emerge -u world.

This thread talks about the udev update issue. I'm still not completely sure how to fix it though. Some stuff appears to be missing. Downgrading udev by adding ">=sys-fs/udev046" fixed the issue.

I have the same problem, but udev is not installed??.

Ran etc-update, and manually edited the configfiles(that I had altered manually during install) back afterwards, so now KDE should start as before. But an attampt at logging on, just passes me a new logonwindow. If I login as root, KDE runs fine

Try logging into a console and see if an error comes up that says Permission Denied: /dev/null. Are you using devfs or udev? Do an

ok seems to be fixed now ran an etc-update for all things udev related and it works thanks. it would be nice if something told me that doing an update would do this though. why does udev rest my file permisions at reboot? wth? can I controll what it sets them to?

I use the devs-1.3.25-r8. People running udev, seems to have problems too, so why change?.

I've been running Gentoo for 1½ years now, without trouble caused by others than myself:) But now an upgade breaks my system, and theres no clue how to fix it?. Frustrating as hell.....

does that not resolve it?

that was the first thing I tried but if your using udev it resets the permissions every time you reboot so that works till you shut down and the problem comes back later. apperantly the problem has to do with the udev rules being moved in a new version of udev so when I upgraded udev and didn't run an etc-update it kept setting /dev/null to 644 the default udev permisions but after I ran etc-update it finds the new udev rules and sets up /dev/null so all can write to it at boot.
