Whin a samba domain, 1 computer is only used for imaging purposes. ie. take an image of the drive, store it on the server, then reimage all other computers. Is there a way however to do updating automatical? For example: a new version of firefox is installed on the special computer, and the change is propagated to the other computers in the domain without having to reimage them all. Is it possible or am i day dreaming? :P

Hi

I don't know if this might work but it's an idea. You can have the imaging computer keep up to date normally (emerge sync and world as usual) but you add the option to build packages (man emerge). On the "clones" you setup a script to rsync to the original, copying the tbz2's over, and then it emerges those. You set it up to run weekly, daily, or whatever and you're set.

The problem could be dealing with the config files (/etc and all) if the computers are not exact clones config-wise. You could deal with them manually, tell them to automerge (which'll eventually get you in trouble) or add them to rsync... or something else really.

Anyway, good luck.

Those computers are Windows XP...they are in a domain where Gentoo is the DC.

Then I didn't understand correctly your last post. So you have 1 Gentoo (the server) and various winxp connected to it, and you want to keep those up to date?

Is that it?
