Release Notes for Gentoo For Zaurus 0.2.2
------------------------------------------------
Welcome to this new release of Gentoo For Zaurus.
In this release we added kernel sources which will allow emerging some more base packages. We have been reordering the base layout, to be more gentooish. We added tbz2ipk.nodev which removes the development libraries from the resulting ipk, making it smaller (thanks Fiore).
We have to give many thanks to Fiore Basile, who has been working hard on this release, compiling many packages (artwiz-fonts-2.4.tbz2, dillo-0.7.3-r4.tbz2, icewm-1.2.14_pre7.tbz2, joe-2.9.8.tbz2, libxsettings-client-0.10.tbz2, matchbox-0.7.1.tbz2, ncurses-5.3-r1.tbz2) and releasing tbz2ipk.nodev. We have the ipk of some of them too. Look at the main feed.
Please, test the "tbz2ipk.nodev" script. If everything works, we will integrate both scripts adding some command line arguments.
Our next main goal is the migration to glibc-2.3.2 and a more recent gcc. This is what we have been working this week. We have not achieved that yet.
Remember that the official feed of compiled packages for zaurus is in http://zaurus.spy.org/lekter/gentooforzaurus/packages . If you compile a package and works, please send me a note (fmonera at opensistemas dot com) so I can upload to the main site.

Hi,
I have tried to install Gentoo for Zaurus on my SL-5500G and it doesn't work:
# mkdir gentooforzaurus
# cd gentooforzaurus
# wget http://zaurus.spy.org/lekter/gentooforzaurus/0.2.2/gentooForZaurus-0.2.2.tar.bz2
# tar xvjf gentooForZaurus-0.2.2.tar.bz2
# vi /etc/exports
/home/werner/gentooforzaurus 192.168.129.201(no_root_squash,rw,sync)
# /etc/init.d/nfs restart
# wget http://zaurus.spy.org/lekter/zgcc/zgcc-3.3.1.tar.bz2
# mkdir /usr/local/arm
# tar -C /usr/local/arm -xvjf zgcc-3.3.1.tar.bz2
# export PATH=/usr/local/arm/3.3.1/bin:$PATH
# distccd --daemon
# ssh -l root 192.168.129.201 (ggfs. Netzwerk neu initialisieren, root hat per Default kein PWD gesetzt, ansonsten "zaurus"
# mount -t nfs -o hard,intr,nolock 192.168.129.1:/home/werner/gentooforzaurus /mnt/net
# cd /mnt/net
# /mnt/net/gentoo-dist/bin/mount -t proc proc /mnt/net/gentoo-dist/proc
# /mnt/net/gentoo-dist/bin/mount -o bind /dev /mnt/net/gentoo-dist/dev
# chroot gentoo-dist /bin/bash
Illegal instruction
So I can't figure out how this would work?
Thanks and bye,
Werner. |

Does anyone know if this project is still active? There doesn't seem much activity on the main site. _________________ This sig left intentionally blank. |

Seems dead, I still haven't had chance to try it out, but having looked a little closer I think it should be based on pdaXrom rather than a sharp rom. |

I've currently got openzaurus on but it seems a bit flakey (maybe because I'm using the latest release, don't know haven't time to play at the moment) so I'm looking for an alternative.
I like gentoo on the desktop so I was thinking gentoo on the pda would be good too. Especially as I could customize all the apps to squeeze exactly what I want out of it, not just what the package writers decide I need. _________________ This sig left intentionally blank. |

Are you using GPE or OPIE? I think I prefer the idea of GPE but it seems less stable and I prefer the PIM stuff in OPIE.
Too many choices!
My current problem is ipkg dies with an error about gunzip already running. The only fix I can find is to upgrade to the latest version, problem is, I'm already on it! _________________ This sig left intentionally blank. |

yvasilev and I are currently working on bringing gentoo on the zaurus.
It's not easy to do and you can not use it much at the moment.
But help would be appreciated.

I like the usability you get with qtopia, but prefer the applications on pdaXrom/GPE. |

I would try pdaXrom but I've got a 5500 which isn't in their list of supported devices
