PostPosted: Sun Jun 19, 2005 4:13 pm    Post subject: Genkernel Without ALSA? Reply with quote

Hi!

I need to disable ALSA from being built-into my new kernel as mplayer has a bug where it segfaults if ALSA was built with the kernel.

I therefore need to have the kernel compiled with genkernel (as I'm not too familiar with doing it manually) but without ALSA. I'm using the --menuconfig option so that I can see the stuff being built into the kernel.

The thing I'm not sure about is that, under the "SOUND" section, ALSA is not enabled but SOUND CARD SUPPORT is enabled.

Should I disable the SOUND CARD SUPPORT? How exactly do I stop ALSA from being built into the kernel?

Thanks a bunch!
Kristy

It can't be that hard, can it ?
The menu has THREE options, the first of which is Sound Card Support.
Without that, you will never have sound.

The second option is a submenu called - friggin amazing - ALSA Support.
Disable everything in it.

Very nice and neutral response adaptr - I believe the Genkernel is for users who don't want to compile their own kernel, thus making it easier to get one - but also loosing some tweaking capabilities? (Unless using --menuconfig).

So, KristyX, just use --menuconfig in the genkernel command or manually setup a kernel without support for ALSA.

*laugh* I did see the ALSA SUPPORT option but it was already disabled so being the paranoid nut that I am, I was worried that genkernel had some other secret way of enabling ALSA *grin*

Thanks for the replies.. appreciate it :D
