I know this seems like I'm beating a dead horse over the whole atheros chipset/madwifi thing, but this card worked fine at one point on a previous install.
I have since completely rebuilt the disk and built an entirely new kernel.

My kernel version is 2.6.12-r4. Everything else is gravy except that I cannot get my wireless card to show up.
I have read several docs on this forum and at the Madwifi Wiki. As far as I can tell, I have all the appropriate settings in my Kernel:
* Loadable module support → Module versioning support: disabled (there is no * at least)
* Device Drivers → Networking support → Wireless LAN (non-hamradio) → Wireless LAN drivers (non-hamradio) & Wireless Extensions: enabled
* Cryptographic options → Cryptographic API: enabled
* Cryptographic options → Cryptographic API → HMAC support: enabled

However, after I reboot and emerge the 'madwifi-driver' and do an iwconfig, i still only seen an eth0 and lo, both without wireless extentions. I see no trace of ath0.

Any help? I know this can work.

You need to load the madwifi driver.
Code:
modprobe ath_pci

Kill, when i do
Code:
modprobe ath_pci

i get the following error(s):

Code:
WARNING: Error inserting wlan (/lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r4/net/wlan.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting ath_rate_onoe (/lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r4/net/ath_rate_onoe.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting ath_pci (/lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r4/net/ath_pci.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

That makes no real sense to me..but, here is all the 'ath_pci' related mess from the dmesg:

Code:

Your kernel is not correclty built. The error is because this
* Device Drivers → Networking support → Wireless LAN (non-hamradio) → Wireless LAN drivers (non-hamradio) & Wireless Extensions: enabled
is not enabled in the kernel.

Verify it is enabled, rebuild and install the kernel. Reboot and rebuild the madwifi driver. you should then be able to load the module.

I fixed it.

My kernel was configured correctly, but I'm still a noob and wasn't copying over the bzImage file to /boot, so it wasn't compiling madwifi-driver against the 'correct' kernel. As soon as I made that change, it worked outright.

*sigh* One thing is sure... this has taught and engraved the conecpt of copying the kernel to /boot when you change it

thanks for the help, kill
