xmodmap for MX700

I'm trying to configure my MX700 logithech mouse but at every command (xev, xmodmap) i get

did you startx before running xmodmap ?

the other app:
x11-misc/imwheel
( not needed for mx700 )

anyway.. i've just found out i should emerge imwheel before^^ so in the end what should i do to make the MX700 work? The posts about that are so long and confusing and say so many different settings..
