I was wondering if there are any plans to port gentoo too the Sharp Zaurus? Every computer under my possesion runs gentoo and I have nothing but great things to say. My Zaurus is the only linux device I'm not pleased with, the potential is there, but both the stock os and OpenZaurus fall short of the potential greatness of the Zaurus. I'm by no means a developer but I think all it needs is a portage tree of it's own with packages that actually work, the hardware factor is relatively simple(compared to the variety of the pc, alpha, ppc etc.....) and I was hoping to see if anyone else shared the desire to see a port for the Zaurus, whether it be in the form of vocal support or actual resources to commit...... _________________ "I am the reaper among sheep.... What architecture/processor does the Zaurus use?

CPUs vary between models: That thing everybody calls a Zaurus for short is the SL-5500, sporting a StrongARM SA-1100. The Japanese models and the future SL-5600 use the new Xscale CPUs. Here's a chart that has them all:
Code: |
Japanese models International models CPU
--------------- -------------------- ---
no equivalent SL-5000D SA-1100
no equivalent SL-5500 SA-1100
no equivalent SL-5500G SA-1100
SL-A300 no equivalent PXA210
SL-B500 SL-5600 PXA250
SL-C700 no equivalent PXA250 |

Basically OZ(OpenZaurus) is going from Z only to other embedded devices (currently runs on ipaq as well as Z) and becoming open
The community is looking for a package management system to replace/succede plain old ipkg. Frankly people like the idea of portage, but a couple of things about it really need to be improved (knowing what the heck a cross-compiler is for one thing, and better handling of binary packages (most people aren't crazy like me and have gcc on thier Zs)) But pretty much it's the cross-compiler awareness holding back gentoo on the Z.
Additionally, check out #openzaurus and #openembedded on freenet. |
