|

I installed linux with a working internet connection (downloading and updating and what not) and when I boot up everything seems fine, except I get this: *warning /etc/init.d/serial missing skiping... (That might not be part of the problem but I figured I'd mention it). Anyway when I gry and run emerge --sync or emerge gnome or emerge-webrsync, I get an error Quote: | rsync error: error in socket IO (code IO) at client server.c(88 ) |
I heard that this might be a problem with my resolv.conf so I checked it out with nano and I see two nameservers listed, then, search mn.rr.com (or something like that). Anyway I called raod runner (my isp) and they don't give me a nameserver they said it was automatic... Am I just missing a number or two, or is there a bigger issue to be solved before I can get the internet working? Thanks |

Is your network working at all? Check ifconfig output. |

It doesn't look like it is working /sbin/ifconfig brings me: init addr. 127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 Rx bytes:0 Tx bytes 0. The init addr listed here isn't the same one as when I looked at my init addr on the live cd which was 192.168.0.3. |

Have you built support for your card in kernel? Which card do you have? Check with lspci. |

Well, I think there is support as I built the kernel with Genkernel and it sould have detected it... Im guessing that your looking for the ethernet controller as I don't have a modem... Please check dmesg for network card related messages
dmesg | grep eth
Are you saying that ifconfig only lists lo0 (no eth0 at all)?
|

Code: | #dmesg | glep eth
e100: eth0: e100.probe: addr 0ydfbff000, irq 20, MAC addr 00:13:200:44:6D:51 |

Your card is there. Did you follow the networking instructions in the handbook?
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=8#doc_chap2
You set up the IP address during your network configuration. |

Wow, thanks I guess I forgot that part of the handbook, I just had to edit my conf.d file. When it said something along the lines of if you will be using DHCP your detection will be automatic I guess I figured there was no more to do, I was wrong, thanks! |
