Hey all!
Out surfing this morning for the latest and greatest and came across this launcher type program and wondered if anyone else has tried or heard of it. Fairly new I believe. It is called Fluxspace and can be found here: http://www.isomedia.com/homes/stevencooper/projects/fluxspace.html
Not being an ebuilder (still get confused easily) I was hoping that maybe some else has tried.
Le me know what you think

from the screenshot... all I see of an extra is that extra panel... Not much of a use for me. _________________ Need to flame people LIVE on IRC? Join #gentoo-otw on freenode! |

I would encourage you to make an ebuild anyways. In many cases all you will need to do is make the directory for the ebuild ie /usr/local/portage/x11-wm/fluxspace/
then copy the ebuild template over to fluxspace-#.#.#.ebuild
set the download directory and try to emerge it.
Most programs are just ./configure; make; make install and portage seems to install most of those just fine. |

The template is /usr/portage/skel.ebuild it has fairly good comments and directions in it. |

Integrates with the Idesk package to enable per workspace desktop icons. Requires Idesk.
Executes programs at startup. Can also manage programs that run in particular workspaces. |
that first one does sound rather interesting. i think i could actually get some use out of that. the second one might work out as well, but not near as useful... _________________ I used gentoo BEFORE it was cool. |

It looks great to me. Just the fact that you can run a different background for each virtual desktop is intriguing.
However, I got a problem. It configured and made and installed well, but won't run:
Code: | Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/local/bin/fluxspace", line 15, in ?
import fluxspace
ImportError: No module named fluxspace |
Any help would be nice. |

Well,
Fluxspace loads now...but still having some issues. Some are my fault for not having the programs installed that the runner is trying to load, but I'm getting some other errors as well...I'll look into it more later. Time to get back to work.

Thank you so much David_Escott for giving a helpful push for writing the ebuild!
It is compiling as we speak, and I am beaming with pride!
I feel so happy, I don't have words . . .
Chickpea, if you have problems I can send you mine (guess I should wait to see if it works . . .), but it really is as hard as following the directions that David_Escott lay out.
Gabriel
edit:
all is well it works, nice and easy |

ggelln,
Thanks for the encouragement. I will have to learn to make an ebuild eventually. I think I will try it out. Been occupied with other things but since I keep recommending this program to others I should at least try it.
What do you think of it?

I really like the program, though I haven't had a lot of time to play with it (soon I want to make an ebuild for wmDrawer, the two will be sweet together).
Basically I use the remeber patch to have programs open in certain workspaces, then I have fluxspace to give me a set of dockapps and launch buttons that make that workspace more personalized.
Makes my area feel more personal

I've add this to CVS (x86 ~ppc because of dependency limitations).
Some feedback from users who have been looking for this would be appreciated.
As well I have added a patch to idesk (currently masked) which allows single-clicking of the icons. I dunno about you, but the double-click timing on idesk drove me up a wall, so I switched to single-click. In any case, it is configureable. |
