boot crash with 2.6.12-r6: Can't open /etc/start.conf ??

I have just compiled 2.6.12-r6 (had 2.6.10-r6).
Compile went well,but I get "Can't open /etc/start.conf" and a kernel panic when booting it.
I used the configuation file from my current kernel (I did turn on smbfs in gconfig).
Google seems to know as little about /etc/start.conf as I do.
Any suggestions?
