I'm not sure on this but shouldn't you have used the x86 installation as I think the I386 is for Intel, I could be wrong though. |

What stage tarball did you start with ?
What is the output of "emerge --info" ? |

hi all, I wanted to chime in because I'm getting the same exact error trying to do a gentoo 2005.1 stage1 install on a pentium 4 machine. I can't post my emerge --info as I'm posting this from links, so if there's any specifc information that would be useful from there so that we can get to the bottom of this, please let me know. |

well, no. you've encountered a famous problem: new users often choose to install using the wrong tarball, and python is merciless when you try to compile for a 686 CHOST when using a tarball that includes libraries that were designed for a 386 CHOST. believe it or not, the x86 tarball is absolutely the wrong tarball for your architecture, and you cannot succeed in using it for your installation because the CHOST is not correct for your architecture. other new users having this problem should read that last sentence again.
performing a successful gentoo install is all about selecting the right tarball, CHOST setting, and march setting for your architecture. you MUST get all three of these things right, or your gentoo install will be b0rked.
now that we know that you've installed from the wrong tarball, we know that there are two ways to approach your problem: the easy fix and the difficult fix. the easy fix is to start over and install from the athlon-xp tarball, NOT from the x86 tarball. just download the appropriate tarball and reinstall.
the hard fix is to jump through a large number of hoops to try to rebuild the files to change the CHOST. unfortunately, changing the CHOST is a very complex problem that involves purging the system of statically retained libraries and is tricky to accomplish properly. i wouldn't advise that option for a new user. i would get the appropriate tarball and start over.

hmmm, and in my case? I started from an x86 stage1 tarball and I'm compiling with i686 for chost and march=pentium4 as a cflag, those should be kosher, no? |

i am no expert on Kosher Law, but you can use the x86 tarball with a P4 if and only if you're bootstrapping from a Stage 1 tarball. if you're using a Stage 2 or a Stage 3 tarball, you must choose the appropriate tarball for your architecture. if @Theweakend is performing a Stage 1 install, then I misspoke, and he is suffering from a python idiosyncracy. (they are common). |

this python problem is very extensively documented as a snafu on Stage 1 installs. there literally have to be THOUSANDS of posts on that subject. a simple search for the "python-fchksum" error that was displayed on your screen would have given you the answer:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-348363-highlight-pythonfchksum.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-314985-start-401.html
at the risk of soundling like a wise guy, you guys should really try the search feature. its very helpful, and it saves alot of unnecessary typing on everyone's part.
on a related subject, there is no good reason to perform a Stage 1 install when a Stage 3 tarball already exists for your architecture. but for some reason, people tend to believe that a Stage 1 install provides them with something special. it doesn't.

getting the right text into the search string is the key to success. if you simply search for "python-fchksum" you will see A LOT of helpful threads. the bottom line is that you need to emerge python before your emerge -e system because of a circular dependency issue.
have fun. |
