|
|
Hello,
I'm using gentoo since a week now and I'm really content with it. Since I'm no more using M$ Windows XP I need some win32 applications anyway for my work. I've the CD's but they're all specified on Windows so I can't install them on linux
Is there any way to install those win32 applications on linux because I don't want to use M$ winxp again nor using 2 Operating Systems
I installed wine and tried to install that application but it tells me that I need Internet Explorer 6 or higher
The problem is that there are no clone applications for my one check here: http://www2.automation.siemens.com/simatic/industriesoftware/html_76/produkte/software-step7.htm |

Try using CrossOver Office or consider VMWare. I have the same problem and VMware is the most stable solution I found that works for me. |

You'd better first try Wine, it's free and it's a faster/cleaner solution then VMWare.
# emerge wine |

Tell us the name of the apps, that would help in determing the best approach. |

So all the apps on that list? Are there other win32 apps or just the ones from that company?
I doubt most of us would be able to test that package since it is commercial, but I bet VMware would run it.
You can download it for a free 30day trial and see for sure. It is a top notch product for running win32 apps. |

I am basically stuck in the same position as you are and am forced to dual boot because of certain software that I need for either school or work. |

Then first install IE in wine (there's a guide in the Documentation, Tips & Tricks section of this forum)...
I don't garantee it works, but if it works it's a better solution then dual booting or using VMWare/Qemu |

By better you mean cheaper?
For anyone that doesn't know, VMware can be pricey, but its level of compatability is remarkable.
(We're not talking DirectX games!)
If you have a fairly recent machine and sufficient RAM, when running fullscreen, most users wouldn't know it was running under emulation. For testing network features between multiple machines its a god send. |
