kde 3

ok, I suppose this isn't really gentoo related (at least, I don't *think* it is), but for kde < 3 I use to be able to log out and get back to the main terminal... that option is no longer there. it seems that kde 3, once launched, wants to be your main ui--no options to quit. am I missing something?!?!

Yep, somewhere along the way kde removed thiis option (boo! hiss!) from kdm. What you have to do now is
1) CTL-ALT-Fn to get a new login prompt
2) Login as root
3) /etc/init.d/xdm stop *gentoo uses xdm to launch kdm)
4) Complete whatever you need without X running
5) /etc/init.d/xdm start
6) Back to business as usual

hm, thats strange ... I can logout and login as new user without problems with kde3 ...

gschneider -- There is a logout out button in my k-menu, however it only logs me out to the main login screen (where you graphically click on what user you want to log into KDE as), not to the terminal that originally opened KDE (by typing kdm).

collins -- You have got to be kidding me! That sure sounds like a coder who only wants experienced linux folk to use kde 3... Is this just a kdm problem (in other words, can you change the .xinit (not sure of the exact file name at the moment) and do a startx and not have this problem)?

wait a minute ... if you log into console, why do you start kdm at all?
just for starting kde?

I have in my .xinitrc:
exec /usr/kde/3/startkde

then do startx and KDE3 is running.

gschneider: That was it! Turns out in following the desktop install instructions from gentoo.org, I blindly used kdm instead of altering my .xinitrc :oops:

Is that .xinitrc reside in the ~/ or is that a global one in /usr/X11/ somewhere? Can you specify a default resolution in there as well?

Just put it in ~, so you can control which desktop different users get to use (I have a couple of users for me to start different things automatically, including desktops - and my sister likes Gnome better...)
