radeon 8500 and dri binary drivers

hey what kind of support is gentoo offering for a radeon 8500...i was looking over at http://dri.sourceforge.net/ and they offer a driver for the radeon to work with xf86 4.x.x has anyone used these....can they be used in gentoo ?

another thing if some one can help....after installing x i set the display manager to kdm and if i try to boot into kde under a user name other then root sound permission is denied but if i startx (which brings up twm) as a normal user and then run startkde from an xterm sound works....how do you correctly change permissions and using what command chmod or chown ....is there documentation on this...link?

oh and ...lol...for dhcp how can you from the terminal promt find the ip your system is using
