|
|
I'm about to buy a monochrome laser printer to be attached to my headless server running Gentoo, and two models I digged up looking promising are the Samsung ML-1710 and ML-2250. The latter features a larger toner cartridge and more pages/minute, and is a bit larger in size. A Friend of mine reported the ML-1710 worked flawlessly for him, though since the ML-2250 weights in at about 20 Euro more than the 1710, and gives additional benefit, I'm more towards the bigger dude...
The Samsung-Website features drivers for both those printers, though they require X and gtk to be installed to set the printer up. I've also downloaded the packages, and tried to find out what license the drivers are under... could not come up with anything usefull, though, except from noting they're actually using X11-only LOKI Installers for their setup routines
Does anyone know if any drivers available under GPL or BSDL not requiring me to set up X to get them working for one of those printers?
Thanks for your time reading all this, regards:

Thanks for the link, though I've checked that (really tremendous) page before
Problem is, there's data about the Samsung 2150 and 2550 available, but unfortunately not for the 2250. _________________ Free Software. Free Sociecty. Better Lives. |

It's been a long time since I set up my ML-2250, but if I remember correctly you can ignore their installer and just grab the .ppd file you need. They include one spl (proprietary Samsung protocol?) ppd file and one postscript ppd file in the drivers they distribute.
If you haven't bought anything yet, I can definately recommend the 2250. You should double check this, but the 2250 uses a 5000 page toner cartridge and is sold with a full 5000 page cartridge. I think the lower end models use a 3000 page toner cartridge and may even be sold with a 1000 or 2000 page 'starter' cartridge.
I've started playing around with Ubuntu, so if I set my printer up in Ubuntu within the next couple of days I'll post again.
Hope this helps,

One more thing; I think you need to buy an addon (hardware) card for the ML-2250 to support postscript.
