argh.... "kernel BUG at fs/reiser4/block_alloc.c: 154"
anybody happen to know why this is happening?

Does this prevent you from using reiser4 or the kernel? Because I often get errors and just about every kernel is bound to give some, but the thing that matters is if they are warnings or serious ones which prevent you from using it. Can you post a bit more details?

Everything goes fine, it looks like the everything is working until it gets down to around the part where it runs fsck.reiser4, then mr. error decides to join the party... then i get a ton of lines of gibberish and have to reboot. Now that I think of it...I upgraded to libaal-1.0.5 and reiser4progs-1.0.5 so maybe that has something to do with it...or not.

Maybe try to update your reiser4 partition to 1.05?

How do I manage that? I've been meaning to, but you can't rebuild the fs unless it's not mounted ...and this being my root partition, I'm not quite sure. I have a couple Reiser4 LiveCDs but they all have outdated reiser4progs.

I released patches to fix this on the archck webpage as the same problem occurs on archck. The patches apply to the module not the kernel.

Check out the RIP Linux LiveCD. The Gentoo Wiki has an entry on updating reiser4 partitions.

I have no idea how to do it the gentoo way, but if you wish to do it manually...

download the driver's source (http://unc.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/ipw2200/ipw2200-1.0.6.tgz)
extract it. cd into the driver's source directory,
patch -p1 < path/to/patch/ipw2200-fix.diff
then 'make', and as root, 'make install'

will patch and install the driver.

Hi,

just installed on my home machine, which has two sata discs. Now I want to do SMART-readings of my discs from time to time to ensure that everything is OK. For this to work I had to apply a patch that can be found here:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/jgarzik/libata/

the rc7 patch worked for me.

Besides that, everything works as it should, even known problems with additional modules i need (zaptel i.e.) seem to be fixed... great!

greets Tom

I beg you to include this patch:
Quote:

This implementation gives the ability to (really) force unmount a file system. It closes all the open files, flushes their contents, releases file locks and tears down memory maps for the files. The util-linux patch is needed to add the -F option to the mount command.

http://developer.osdl.org/dev/fumount/
I think this will greatly improve usability and replaces a fake mount -f option. Also #define NO_DOOR_LOCKING 1 in /usr/src/linux/drivers/block/ide-cd.c will actually make that eject button usefull again.

It works perfectly here. It requires a very small amount of hacking, but it's all worth while.

Hello,

First of all thanks for the hard work that went into nitro-sources.

I used to have a very nicely working 2.6.12-morph7 which I replaced with this release, running make oldconfig over the morph config file. I've noticed a substantial performance decrease: it feels like the computer is swapping more than it needs to. It's a Dell laptop with PM1.3/512RAM and has another 512 swap. In the configuration posted below, you'll notice I've turned off the patch that deals with keeping some stuff both in swap and RAM in order to prevent unnecessary swapping; when I had it enabled the performance decrease was even larger for some reason. I'm not sure what to do about it.

Also, if I compile more than one IO scheduler, how can I choose which one is used? Can I switch them while the system is running?

I'll be very grateful for any advice.

Code:

Portage 2.0.52-r1 (default-linux/x86/2005.1, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r1, 2.6.13.2-nitro1 i686)

Swap prefetching is still experimental and in heavy development if you check the -ck mailing list there are real regressions noted prior to versions 10 (like in this nitro kernel). We're currently up to version 11 which is in 2.6.13-ck6. Of course this doesn't answer your question exactly...

Just to make sure I said it clearly enough: even without that patch performance is significantly lower than with 2.6.12-morph7. Turning off swap makes the system fly but with swap, it's really bad.

http://ck.kolivas.org/patches/swap-prefetch/ck5_sp11.patch over 2.6.13.2-nitro1 helps. I'm happy now.

Is it ok to have no swap? I'd like to disable mine and I have a gig of ram which I've never even fully used yet. If it's ok, which options do I have to disable in the kernel and are there any other changes that are required?
Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong please...

Well, it should be possible. I don't think its a good idea though. If you're not realy low on harddisc-space, what would be the benefit of not using swap? I mean, since you say you never completely use your 1gig of ram, you never use swap anyway. But should you ever happen to need more that your 1 gig, you might be happy for the extra. In the end it's meant to speed things up, so i'd rather leave some space for swap....

that said, you can "disable" swap by just not mounting a swap partition (i.e. remove the swap line from fstab). Once again, I dont think its a good idea.

You can try it out by doing a

Code:
$ swapoff -a

this will disable all swap. To reenable it, do a

Code:
$ swapon -a

Hi,

just installed on my home machine, which has two sata discs. Now I want to do SMART-readings of my discs from time to time to ensure that everything is OK. For this to work I had to apply a patch that can be found here:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/jgarzik/libata/

the rc7 patch worked for me.

Besides that, everything works as it should, even known problems with additional modules i need (zaptel i.e.) seem to be fixed... great!

greets Tom

I've made a similar posting in the 2.6.13.1-nitro1 thread. Everyone who uses libata needs this patch in order to make hdparm, hddtemp, smartctl and stuff like that work.

Please seppe, hear our begging.

thanks for posting this. I'm not sure if it is just a placebo effect, but I realy think my system is way more responsive now, whereas without this patch, it was often unresponsive for a second or so...

Isn't ck5 included in nitro?

Yeah but that patch upgrades the sp code to that in -ck6. Also there was apparently a bug in the write throttling patch in -ck5 (gone in -ck6) causing stalls so maybe that's the problem and it has nothing to do with swap.

k, thanks. I applied the patch, but I don't think I notice anything different (it might be slightly more responsive, but I still sometimes get lag).

nitro2, seppe? ;)

That would be great, especially if the second would have the logo problem resolved along with any other easy problems. This one is running great so far, but there's always room for improvement :).

Well, I don't think I want to install a new kernel just because of a nice logo (I use gensplash, so I don't see it anyway)...
So we already got the update to ck6 (if I understood that right), what else should be different in a 2.6.13-nitro2 ?

On my wishlist, there is
    - LIRC integration
    - IPW2X00 integration
    - Any speedups (as always)

    - and the "I need a coffee module".. damn it's too early here to think of a list like this..

Got to get a coffee...

No, we don't have ck6 yet, which is why I want a nitro2 ;) All that the previous patch is for is the prefetching of swappy stuff.
